CNC Surface Grinder Guide

Grinding plays an important role in the metal processing industry, especially in the end process. In the field of metal grinding, the surface grinding wheel moves down to the workpiece and moves forward and backward for processing. Grinding wheels are usually used with controllable permanent magnets (used as magnetic chucks) or other magnetic materials, and can also be used with vacuum chucks or other fixtures.

The most common surface grinder has a grinding wheel that moves along a horizontal axis and rotates, using the outer periphery of the grinding wheel for grinding. Rotating surface grinders commonly referred to as "Blanchard" type grinders move and rotate the grinding wheel along the vertical axis, using the end face of the grinding wheel for grinding.

The grinder can be used to remove large amounts of material and grind on flat surfaces with obvious spiral grinding marks. It can also be used to make and sharpen metal stamping die sets, flat shear blades, fixture bases, or any flat and parallel surfaces. The surface grinder can be operated manually or with a CNC control system.

CNC Controlled Grinding Routes

Programmed cutting is not limited to turning, milling, and drilling, but it can also be used for grinding. The CNC control system is equipped with a humanized operation panel, which can correctly display the grinding movement. The friendly interface not only ensures accurate operation but also provides great convenience for the processing environment of different conditions.

With modern programming technology, today's grinder operators only need to access the corresponding cutting program from the CNC control system storage, and the machine will process with the same program. In Taiwan, there are many cutting-edge CNC grinders suppliers who provide comprehensive grinding solutions to users around the world, such as PROMA Machinery, GRINDIX Industrial, PRAISE Machinery, WISE Machinery, etc. These Taiwanese grinding machine manufacturers are experienced professionals who understand the various applications and technical issues of grinding machines better than their customers. For example, the CNC Roll Grinder Machinery made by PROMA adopts FANUC CNC-controller and is applied to roll grinding.

Classical Grinding Measures

In all grinding methods (such as cylindrical grinding, internal grinding, centerless grinding), surface grinding is the oldest and most widely used one. CNC grinding is a finishing process, which uses a rotating grinding wheel to smooth the surface of metal or non-metal materials. To be precise, under the CNC control mechanism, the unevenness and burrs on the surface of the workpiece are removed to create a fine surface of the workpiece.

The Engineering of Complex Grinding

Regarding the mechanical structure, the surface grinder is composed of a grinding wheel, a workpiece clamping device, and a reciprocating table. During processing, the clamping device fixes the workpiece in place.

Clamping devices can be divided into two types: one is to clamp the workpiece with a magnetic chuck and fix the workpiece in place, and the other is by vacuum or mechanical means. The performance of the clamping device is essential to the entire machining process, because only with a firm clamping device can the grinding work be completed accurately.

Factors Affecting Abrasive Cutting Processes

Other key factors that affect the quality of surface grinding are the material of the grinding wheel and the workpiece. Generally, workpiece materials include aluminum, brass, steel, cast iron, and mild steel. Some of these materials are relatively stable and will not adhere to the grinding wheel during processing, while some may corrode during the processing and then adhere to the grinding wheel, making them less suitable for complex machining.

Another key factor is the shape of the grinding wheel, which can be of various shapes. On-site operators can dress wheels for special grinding purposes. It is worth noting that in the surface grinding process, the shape of the grinding wheel will affect the reverse shape of the workpiece, so the operator must always pay attention to the shape change in order to modify the grinding wheel in time to maintain the grinding quality.

Finishing Process by Grinding

A surface grinder is a machine tool used for precision grinding, including grinding of specific sizes or surface finishing. Its accuracy depends on the type and application of the surface grinder. However, a certain level of accuracy can be achieved on most surface grinders.

Programmed Grinding & Smart Grinding

CNC programmed grinding can make the surface grinding very accurate and highly productive. With the growth of industrial demand and market trends asking for smart manufacture, it is foreseeable that surface grinders equipped with CNC control systems will be commonly used and coordinated with the smart controlling system to maximize the in-house capital goods for the market of professional users.
