Bandsaw Machine & Metalworking

There are two main types of sawing machines in the industrial market: band saw machines and circular saw machines. Unlike a bandsaw machine, a circular sawing machine uses a circular tool to perform a sawing procedure instead of a saw band, which leads to its different processing characteristics from a bandsaw machine.

There are two main types of sawing machines in the industrial market: bandsaw machine and circular sawing machine. Unlike a bandsaw machine, a circular sawing machine uses a circular tool to perform a sawing procedure instead of a saw band, which leads to its different processing characteristics from a bandsaw machine.

A band saw is also called as bandsaw or metal cutting bandsaw. It is a powered sawing machine with a long and sharp blade. The bandsaw blades consist of a continuous toothed metal belt stretched between the wheels to cut the target material.

Applications of bandsaw machines

On the market, bandsaw machines are especially used in metalworking and woodworking, but can also be used to cut a variety of other materials. The main advantages of the band saw machines include the uniform cutting movement due to the uniformly distributed tooth load, and the ability to cut irregular or curved shapes like a jig saw.

Curve scales

The minimum radius of the curve that can be cut is determined by the width of the saw band and the curve. Most band saw machines are designed with two wheels rotating on the same plane, one of which is powered. In addition, some may distribute three or four loads.

Band and blade

The blades of the band saw machines can have various pitches and size ratios, which makes the band saw machine highly versatile and capable of cutting various raw materials, such as wood, metal and plastic. Today, almost all band saws are driven by electric motors, and line shaft saws were once common on the market.

Development of band sawing

The first appearance of the band saws dates back to the 19th century. Around the 1800s, William Newberry obtained a British patent for this idea. However, the band saw still cannot be used for practical cutting work, because at that time it was not possible to produce blade for band saws that was sufficiently accurate and durable. The continuous bending of the blade on the wheel would cause material damage.

After about 40 years, a woman named Anne Paulin Crepin invented a new blade welding technology for building band saws, which is enough to overcome the previous obstacles. The French inventor applied for a patent for the welding technology in 1846. Soon after, she sold the patent to the Parisian manufacturer named A. Perin & Company for production use.

The patents across the Atlantic Ocean

In 1836, the first US band saw patent was granted to Benjamin Barker, a man in Ellsworth, Maine. And the first practical bandsaw machine produced in the United States was designed and launched by Paul Prybil.

Before the popularization of band sawing methods, there was a time when power hacksaws with reciprocating blades were very common and practical in the metal processing industry. Then with the advancement of technology, band saws and cold saws gradually replaced power hacksaws.

In recent years, most band saw machines are automatically controlled and operated by computer numerical control systems. Common automatic band saws can preset feed speed, return, descent, and have built in work piece feeding and parts fixing mechanism. These automated mechanical functions help increase production efficiency. Under such automated production conditions, it is impractical to assign one operator to each band saw. Today's factories prefer one operator to manage several bandsaw machines to achieve maximum cost efficiency.
