Allowing a machine to have more than two processing capabilities will increase the added value of the machine tool because the business owner does not need to purchase a new machine tool for additional functions. Machine tools that can perform drilling and milling tasks include turning centers (i.e. turning and milling centers), milling machines, machining centers, tapping centers, etc. We will introduce two of them in this article.


Milling machines and machining center

Versatility is one of the main features of milling machines and machining centers. The machines that can perform drilling and milling tasks are milling machines and machining centers. These two milling models are highly developed machine tools that can handle many precision machining tasks at once. The machining center was developed by the extension of a milling machine in the middle of the last century. Since then, this type of machine tool has made good progress in the industry and has also been widely used in various industries. Obviously, the development of milling machines and machining centers are closely related, because they are based on the same machining task requirements.

The milling process of these two machine tools is basically the same. They advance the spinning tool into one or more work pieces to remove material from work pieces. This processing method can be implemented in different directions. In addition to turning, milling also involves a variety of operations, ranging from single tiny parts to heavy and large milling tasks.

Similar to turning, milling is one of the most commonly used machining methods to provide precision tolerances. Due to its practical value, the milling method is very popular in industry. Conventional lathes are relatively difficult to process work pieces with complex contours. Therefore, the concept of machining center was gradually formed. The term "machining center" can be used to describe various CNC (computer numerical control) drilling and milling machines equipped with some key but sometimes optional accessories such as tool magazines, automatic tool changers (ATC), electric turrets, coordinate measuring machine (CMM), multi-axis working table, etc.


Turning centers

Unlike the lathe concept in the past, the turning center is one of the most versatile machine tools on the market. It can also handle many difficult machining tasks like a milling machine and a machining center. Based on its various functions, the turning and milling machine is also called CNC turning center. It is a machine tool that has both turning and milling functions. It can rotate the work piece on the rotating axis to perform various machining operations, such as cutting, knurling, and grinding, drilling, deforming, finishing and turning.

These machining tasks are performed by tools applied to the work piece to create objects symmetrical to the axis driven by the spindle. Lathes can be divided into two categories according to the way of clamping work pieces, namely vertical lathes and horizontal lathes. In the vertical lathe, the work piece is clamped vertically, and the cutting tool is installed in the same direction, so that the processing is performed vertically. Compared with horizontal lathes, this way of clamping is stronger due to the effect of gravity. Therefore, manufacturers of vertical lathes usually extend vertical lathes to high precision production equipment for various precision manufacturing fields such as the automotive industry, aerospace, sports equipment, and some large-scale work piece processing.
 

Clamping system counts

During drilling and milling, the clamping system is very important for determining precision and accuracy. In the vertical clamping mechanism, the lathe spindles are located behind the chuck. These spindles may be belt driven or designed with other types of drive mechanisms. Like other milling machines and machining centers, lathes can also be equipped with power tools and tool magazines to improve their functionality and versatility and provide users with greater processing possibilities.
