Regarding the machine tools that can also proceed drilling and tapping tasks, there are turning centers (i.e. turn-mill centers), milling machines, machining centers, tapping centers, and some type of drilling machines. Here we would introduce two of them here in the article.

Turning centers

Based on the functionality, a turn mill machine is also known as CNC turning center, which is a machine tool capable of both turning and milling functions and rotates a work piece on an axis of rotation to perform various machining operations such as cutting, knurling, sanding, drilling, deformation, facing, and turning; such machining are conducted with tools that are applied to the work piece and to create an object with symmetry with the axis which is driven by the primary spindle. In usual circumstances, turning machines are categorized into two main types according to the way that clamp the work pieces. Those are vertical lathe and the horizontal counterparts.

For the former, the work piece is clamped vertically and the cutting tool is thus installed the same direction so that the machining is conducted vertically. This way the clamping is much more stern and fixed due to the gravity effect compared to the horizontal methodology and manufacturers of vertical turning machines usually made their vertical turning machines into great manufacturing facilities for users in a variety of industrial sectors that pursue for high precision, such as automotive industry, aerospace sector, sport equipment application, and other fields with larger size work pieces.

With the vertical clamping mechanism, the spindles of vertical turning lathes are also located behind the chuck, while some may be belt-driven, and some may be other types of driving mechanisms. Like other milling machines and machine centers, turning lathes can also be equipped with power tools as well as too magazines to boost its functionality and versatility, granting wider processing possibility to users. Many of these power turrets are driven by single motor with servo features, which can assure the best machining effects and save the optimal energy consumption; at the mean time, they can also provide great rigidity onto the work pieces, rendering an ideal cutting performances.

Machining center

Another type of the versatile machinery that can proceed drilling and tapping (and sometimes even boring) tasks are the machining centers. Machining center is a highly developed machine tool that can deal with many precision machining tasks all at once. At first, machine center is developed from milling machines at the mid of the last century and since then, the development of this specific type of machine tools goes well in the industry, and after that, machine centers are widely applied in all kinds of industries, contributing a wide range of industrial efforts.

In regard to milling process, it is the process of machining that utilizes spinning tools to remove work piece materials by advancing a tool into one or several work pieces. This machining method could be done on different directions. Besides turning, milling covers a wide variety of various operations and ranges a wide scale from single tiny parts to heavy and large milling operation tasks. Similar to turning, milling is one of the most usually adopted machining methods that render precision tolerances. Due to its practical values, the development of milling method is highly popular in the industrial world. Its productive and effective nature for rendering work pieces with complex profiles is comparatively hard to achieve by conventional turning lathes. With this expectation, the following development and the idea of machine centers are thus gradually formed.

The phrase “machining center” can be used to describe a wide variety of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) drilling and milling machineries that are accommodated with several critical but sometimes optional accessories equipped together with the machine body itself, such as tool magazine, ATC (automatic tool changer), power tool turret, CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine), multi-axis working tables, and other models.
