An Overview of Drill Press Rotary Table

Posted on Jan 9, 2021

Drill press rotary table can provide precision material positioning, ensuring the drill press can feed and cut at exact intervals accurately around the fixed axis. Adding a dividing plate on the drill press rotary tables achieves a higher level of accurate work positioning, which functions more ideal than the indexing plates at divisions.

What Is a Drill Press?

Drill press rotary tables are rotary tables that are suitable for mounting on the drill press. Drill press machines are also known as drilling machines, which are the equipment used to produce holes in mostly hard and difficult materials. The drilling tool is held by a spindle which is rotated by the machines. The work pieces will be fed into the drill and be clamped on the table. The arrangement of the drilling tool varies to meet the requirements for different spindle speed or for automatically feeding on some machines. For example, the drill might be held by chucks with jaws which move simultaneously and radially, or with a shank that matches with the tapered hole of the spindle. In general drilling work, drill press machines have only one spindle, but there are drilling machines with more spindles for simultaneous and consecutive drilling and multiple holes drilling applications. Though mainly used for drilling holes, drilling machines can also enlarge holes by mounting a bore, finish holes with a reamer, or form screw threads in the inner surface of the holes with tapping tools.

What is a Drill Press Rotary Table?

To help to feed and position the work piece and perform the drilling process, rotary tables and cross slide tables with indexing plates are popular accessories for drill presses in various sizes. Drill press rotary table can provide precision material positioning, ensuring the drill press can feed and cut at exact intervals accurately around the fixed axis. Many rotary tables can be mounted with indexing plates for indexing applications. Also, adding a dividing plate on the drill press rotary tables achieves a higher level of accurate work positioning, which functions more ideal than the indexing plates at divisions. The fixture mounted in this style is commonly called the dividing head or indexing head. As for the cross slide tables for drill press, which are also called X-Y tables or compound tables by definition,  they have cross slide capacity on X axis and Y axis that are greatly suitable for repeatedly and consistently axis operation. Both the cross slide tables and rotary tables are popular high precision positioning devices and widely manufactured for mounting on drill presses.

Construction of Drill Press Rotary Table

Drill press rotary table is helpful for holding irregular shaped work pieces for drilling evenly spaced holes in metal parts. In drilling machines, the drill bit which is responsible for cutting or replaced by other cutting tools to perform tapping or enlarging holes is also rotated by the spindles. With the desired rotating speed ranges from 100 to 1000 RPM and the high precision rotation of drill press rotary tables, the drill bit can apply the force to press against the metal parts.

The core elements of drill press rotary table include the disc where the metal components are clamped, a solid base for clamping onto the drill press and a controller, which might be a handle or CNC system. When the operator provides input to drill press rotary tables, the worm gear and the mating gear begin the accurate rotation. Every gear of the tables are critically calibrated in degrees for optimal operation. The chuck would be used to grip the work piece. Dial indicators are required when setting prior to the operation. It is mounted to check if the chuck is centered. After firmly installing the chuck with bolts, the operators can clamp the work on the drill press rotary table and the drilling work is ready to begin. In the case when there are bigger components being cut, the jaw chucks with inside jaws are less suitable than ones with outside jaws.

As for the table disc, the disc is critically machined with the rotating surface where the metal parts are positioned. The disc will spin precisely under the commands from controller and motor. It is also the components where the indexing plate and dividing plate can be placed to achieve even more excellent drilling performance.

Drilling in Turning and Milling Machine

In addition to adding drill press rotary tables in a drilling machine, it is also popular to apply drilling applications in turning centers or milling machines with the CNC system. In the turning center, the cutting tools are stationary, and the bar stock will be rotated with the spindle. If drilling is the only operation needed to perform on the machine, it is more recommended to mount the drill in the turning center and then complete the work rapidly and accurately. Drilling can also perform on a CNC milling machine when the target holes you are drilling are larger than 1.5mm. If you are going to create smaller holes or much deeper holes, it will be more suitable to drill on a drill press rotary table.
