Band Saw Machine and the Corresponding Applications

Band saw machine is also called as bandsaw, which is a powered sawing machine with a long and sharp blade. The blade is composed of a continuous toothed metal belt, and stretched between the wheels to cut the target work piece or material. The band saw is particularly suitable for the field of metal processing due to its fast and effective characteristics, but it can also be used for various other materials in the cutting industry.

Advantages of band sawing

The advantages of band saw machine (metal cutting bandsaw) include uniform cutting action due to uniformly distributed tooth loads, and the ability to have irregular or curved shapes, just like a jigsaw machines. The minimum radius of the cutting curve is determined by the width of the saw band and the curve. The two wheels of most band sawing machines rotate on the same plane, and one of them is powered. In addition, some band saws may have three or four loads, thereby improving the uniformity of the machine. The band saw design ensures better distribution and ultimately brings better performance.

Sawing blade types

With regard to the blades of the band saw machine (metal cutting bandsaw), there can be various tooth pitches and size ratios, which makes the band saw machine (metal cutting bandsaw) highly versatile and capable of cutting raw steel, copper and other materials. Today, almost all band sawing machines (band saws) are driven by electric motors.

The design and concept of the band saw machine dates back to the 19th century. Around 1809, William Newberry obtained a British patent for the concept. At that time, the band sawing machine (cutting bandsaw) could not be applied in practice, because the technology was not enough to produce accurate and durable blades for band sawing machine. Continued bending of the blade on the wheel will cause welding of the material or joint to fail. About 40 years later, a woman Anne Paulin Crepin developed a welding technology that overcomes this technical obstacle. This French inventor applied for a patent in 1846.

Development in the US market

In the United States, the first American patent of band saw machine was granted to a man named Benjamin Barker in 1836. Paul Prybil launched a practical band sawing machine in the United States. Therefore, there was a time when electric hacksaws with reciprocating blades were very common in the metal processing industry, because band sawing machine (band saw) can easily meet the processing needs of customers. After more advanced sawing technology, band sawing machines (band saws) and cold saws replaced hacksaws and became the main cutting tools in the global industrial market.

Today, most band sawing machines (band saws) are automatically controlled and operated by CNC (computer numerical control) systems. Common band sawing machine (band saws) has preset feed speed, return, descent, part feeding and part clamping functions. The clamping function allows the work piece to be firmly fixed during the sawing process. The concept of CNC controlled band sawing machines (band saws) emerged in response to modern production conditions. Under such production conditions, it is not practical to appoint a field operator for each band sawing machine (band saws), and it wastes manpower. With the help of an automatic mechanism, one operator can efficiently feed and unload many CNC controlled automatic band saws.

CNC controlled sawing

Some automatic band sawing machines (band saws) that rely on digital control can not only operate faster, but also cut in a more precise manner, and eventually perform complex bevel cutting tasks. Most modern band sawing machines (band saws) are equipped with CNC controllers to adapt to today's processing requirements and standards.
