Carriage Grinder

Because carriage grinding integrates various types of grinding mechanisms, it is a high-end processing machine that can achieve high accuracy rails and carriages processing within a specific operating condition and time duration.

Carriage grinders are carriage grinding machines that are custom-made to do the rail and carriage grinding procedures in a series of mechanical manipulations under the control of a CNC programming mechanism. The mechanism of the carriage grinders integrates many grinding features such as surface grinding, external grinding, roll grinding, profile grinding, and other similar grinding mechanisms regarding the working operation.

Rails and Carriage Processing by Carriage Grinders

Because carriage grinding integrates various types of grinding mechanisms, it is a high-end processing machine that can achieve high accuracy rails and carriages processing within a specific operating condition and time duration. The present article will introduce each working mechanism separately in each section.

Surface Grinding for Carriage and Rail Parts

Surface grinding is one of the most important parts of the whole finishing process for metal processing procedures. After forming, cutting, and other complex processing, many workpieces go to this step for further finishing. The process of surface grinding is used to produce a smooth finished surface on either flat or other specific surfaces. It is a widely used abrasive machining process by which a spinning wheel is covered in rough particles that cut chips of metallic or nonmetallic substance from a workpiece, rendering a flat or smooth surface.

There are different grinding processes, and surface grinding is one of the most general grinding operations. CNC surface grinding is a finishing process that utilizes a rotational abrasive wheel to smooth the surface of metallic or non-metallic materials in order to deliver a refined physical situation by removing the layer and impurities on the workpiece surfaces under the control of programmed cutting routes that is driven by professional grinding systems. Therefore, these processes will attain the desired surface for functional purposes that are planned and programmed by engineering experts.

Mechanical Frame of Carriage Grinders

The mechanical composition of carriage grinders is simple but also detailed, and the mechanical structure of surface grinders is composed of an abrasive wheel, a workpiece holding device, and a reciprocating table. During machining, the holding device holds the material in place while it is being machined. The clamping mechanism can be done via two methods: one is for the ferromagnetic pieces, which are held in place by a magnetic chuck, while the non-ferromagnetic and nonmetallic pieces are held in place by either vacuum or mechanical means. The clamping mechanism is crucial to the whole processing since only with the rigid positioning and clamp, can the work be done accurately and precisely during the processing.

Roll Grinding and Rail & Carriage Grinders

The work of roll grinding is quite difficult since this is not a conventional operation. Roll grinding is similar to cylindrical grinding but roll grinders are designed differently with distinctive working mechanisms. A roll grinder is a powered grinding tool or machine tool that is used for the grinding process, which is a common type of machining that utilizes abrasive wheel or wheels as the cutting means for processing. To be specific, although roll grinding is nearly the same as cylindrical grinding in most of the processing details, there are some critical differences between the two categories.

First of all, the roll grinding method is developed specifically for certain issues that usually require machines that are designed for heavy works. Therefore, these machines are larger in size, heavier in weight, and are more rigid if compared with plain cylindrical grinders. These machines have no provision for doing tapered works and tasks. Rolls are commonly used in many industrial sectors for processing products, paper, paint, steel, textiles, and rubber material processing.

The length of the rolls varies from a few centimeters up to six meters or more. The specifications vary based on the demands. These rolls have to do with the quality of the finish. Workpieces with high-quality finishes do not need any further post-processes such as polishing or buffing. As a result, the overall productivity is improved.

Cylindrical Grinding and Precision Carriage Grinding

Precision carriage grinders are complicated designs. This type of grinder contains some grinding elements of cylindrical grinding. A cylindrical grinder is one of the grinding machines that are used to shape the outer side of workpieces through the grinding mechanism. It can process a variety of shapes; however, the object must have at least a central axis of rotation so that it can spin concentrically. The workpieces a cylindrical grinding machine can process may have configuration ranges from the cam, ellipse to the crankshaft, and more.

The essential definition of cylindrical grinding is that the machine must have four critical actions: Firstly the workpiece must be constantly rotating; secondly, the grinding wheel, i.e. cutter, must be rotating constantly; thirdly, the grinding wheel is fed forwards and backward towards the workpiece. Last, workpieces are traversed with respect to the grinding wheel parts.

Compared with Cylindrical Grinding

The four movements discussed are critical to all the processing works. The majority of cylindrical grinders nowadays utilize all four movements, while there are still some other grinding machines that only utilize three of the four actions to process. From the mechanical point of view, the final outcome may be the eventual goal but sometimes the processing procedures are also important if users consider the processing as one element to the quality control basis.

Carriage grinding also takes a series of steps to finish the final outcome. A carriage grinding machine is designed with many elements introduced above for precision rails and carriage processing. The CNC control system of this type of machine is hence very crucial so that the working efficiency could be improved. With this machine, manufacturers are able to do a complicated series of profile processing with one single machine station.

Today, grinding machines are used in many processing procedures in order to further perfect the quality of the end products. Profile grinding is critical to many operation protocols as customers are coming with different background requests and demands. The goal of the manufacturers is to make the product viable according to the ordered specifications, and the responsibility of onsite workers is to make this happen. Rail and carriage grinding machines need to be well adjusted to achieve those processing demands.
