CNC machinery applications in different industries

Computer numerical control machinery (CNC) allows many different kinds of industries to manufacture a wide range of complex components specifically for their respective application requirements. Although mass production is used for certain applications, many industries require customized parts for specific applications.

Many companies are led to seek CNC machine to operate because they can use computers to accurately design and manufacture parts. From the medical field to the transportation field, everything depends on the processing of parts. Compared with other production methods that can be achieved through the advancement of computers and machines, this machining process can achieve a more complex and more personalized design.

In what industries is CNC machinery prevalent?

As we have mentioned above different industries have different requirements and therefore might use custom CNC machine to produce the required parts. These machines often use different technologies to process the materials needed by the industrial sector to manufacture parts. Other companies may choose the professional CNC machinery industry to fill orders. Although we often associate machining with metal only, machine shops and manufacturers have successfully used other materials to make parts. Let’s have a look at some of the industries that would not exist without CNC machines.

Aerospace Industry

High speed, fast airflow, and extremely high pressure are just three conditions encountered by equipment in the aerospace industry. In order to avoid damage to the aircraft, engineers must accurately construct each component. Even small errors can cause airflow, cause resistance, or increase wear of parts. CNC machinery in the aerospace industry must meet these high-precision requirements. The manufacturer must use the ultra-durable materials to create such tolerances. The materials used will depend on the part created and the required characteristics of the assembly. Parts manufactured for the aerospace industry include several components of the aircraft and the equipment that serves them, including, manifolds, airfoils, bushings, landing gear parts, and more. CNC machine is the perfect method to manufacture prototypes. After having a 3D image on the computer, the engineer can make quick changes to the design based on the test.

Automotive and Transportation Industries

Many similar components created for the aviation industry (such as engine parts) may also enter projects used in the transportation industry. Just as research is crucial to the aerospace industry, it also plays an important role in the transportation field. Automobile and transportation vehicle designers need a way to physically test prototypes to obtain information about how to change the model. Using CNC machines to manufacture equipment and test it, you can create prototypes that meet exact specifications faster. The aerospace industry requires the manufacture of faster-than-sound aircraft, while the transportation industry requires durable components to transport goods across the country. The transportation industry may require CNC machined parts including those used on its various vehicles, such as passenger cars, freight trains, shipping vessels, trucks, passenger rail components, and others.
Since CNC machinery can manufacture parts from a variety of materials, everything from brakes to engine parts and even tools can be manufactured by these machine tools. Just as passenger cars continue to evolve to improve efficiency, freight vehicles in the transportation industry are facing similar changes.

Medical Industry

The medical industry relies on customized products to meet many of the needs of its patients. However, many devices used in the medical field are disposable, which can protect patients from infectious diseases. Companies in this industry need high precision and large numbers to meet the needs of their facilities. Sometimes, these companies may need prototypes before requiring full production, especially when testing new ideas. Various types of CNC machine tools are very suitable for the needs of the medical field. Due to the variety of materials and equipment available, people in the medical field can create a variety of parts through CNC machines, including, implants, electronic enclosures for monitoring devices, MRI machines, research equipment, electrical parts, medical instruments, and others. The advantages of CNC machine in the medical field include the rapid creation of customized parts.

Oil and Gas Industry

In order to manufacture large machines for oil refineries and drilling rigs, the petrochemical industry needs to precisely assemble precision machined parts. Without a perfect fit, the valve may leak, the piston may not generate pressure or the cylinder may not fill. To increase facility productivity, petrochemical companies need CNC machined parts. Drilling rigs are another place where parts must have higher tolerances. Unlike other facilities, rigs are located in remote areas. If a component does not work properly, replacement or repair may take several days. The production of parts for drilling rigs must be up to the task for the first time and must be kept in operation even when salt is applied to the sea, desert dust, or snow in the northern plains. CNC machinery has the capability to produce high-quality parts for pipelines, refineries, and drilling rigs, including drill bits, pins, cylinders, rods, pistons, valves, and cylinders.

Electronics Industry

Although CNC machining can produce large parts, it is also excellent at designing small parts, such as those used in the electronics industry. For such a small part, some components will require laser precision to achieve the required accuracy (up to 10 microns). In addition to the electronic devices and insulators commonly found in electronic devices, the industry may also require communication components. These components can protect communication equipment from electronic interference, or establish electrical connections between components such as heat sinks, electrical insulation, and amplifier housings. The smaller the part, the tighter the tolerance. When it comes to electronic and electrical components, there is little room for error in the micro machining process. The task of cutting and controlling the tools on a computer increases the possible precision at the human level. The electronics industry benefits greatly from the superior accuracy of components, housing and other parts manufactured by CNC machines.

Marine Industry

Due to the many components manufactured by the CNC machinery used in the industry, the marine industry has stayed alive. Unlike other industries, most things used in the marine industry are water-resistant, because most components will be directly exposed to water or to the humid environment around lakes, rivers, and oceans, which may wear parts. Since most electronic equipment does not work well in wet conditions, electrical equipment needs special consideration. The electronic equipment on the ship needs a casing to prevent water from accumulating in the water. For the marine industry, CNC machinery is a method of producing many parts on ships, especially those that need to be perfectly matched with other parts, such as propellers, engine parts, prototype molds, ship parts, etc. CNC machinery benefits the marine industry through its ability to customize parts. Whether it is a large transport ship or a private ship, the parts on the ship may need to be changed to create a ship that meets user needs.
