An Introduction to CNC Roll Grinders: What Are They and How They Work?

Roll grinders are power grinding tools or machine tools used in the grinding process. Grinding is a common method of processing using an abrasive wheel or wheel as a cutting tool. Roll grinding is the main feature. Some roll grinders can do a lot of grinding tasks including some simple milling tasks.

Grinding Wheel

Using the shear deformation method, each abrasive on the surface of the grinding wheel will cut a small piece from the workpiece. There are a large number of types of grinders on the market, including belt grinders, bench grinders, cylindrical grinders, surface grinders, tool, and cutter grinders, jig grinders, gear grinders, die grinder, angle grinder, and roll grinder, and other grinding machines. Grinding machines all need the wheels to grind, so that is why grinding machines suppliers are always coupled with the wheel suppliers.

Cylindrical grinder includes types that use centers and the center-less. They are also called cylindrical grinding machines. Cylindrical grinders can be equipped with multiple grinding wheels for different purposes.

It rotates the workpiece and passes it through one or more wheels to form a cylinder. The type of grinding machine is commonly used to manufacture precision rods, tubes, bearing races, bushings, and many similar parts. On the other hand, when manufacturing various high precision shafts, center grinding or center machining is usually used.

The main function of this machine is to grind the center of the shaft very precisely. There is an accurate circular center hole on both sides, which can ensure a high repeat accuracy on the live center.

What's the Difference Between a Roll Grinder and a Cylindrical Grinder?

Specifically, roll grinding and cylindrical grinding are almost the same in most processing details, but there are still some key differences between the two categories. First, the roll grinding method was developed specifically for certain processing tasks, which usually require machines that can load heavy and large workpieces.

Therefore, compared to ordinary cylindrical grinders, roll grinders are larger in size, heavier, and stronger. On the other hand, the roll grinder is usually not designed for tapering tasks.

Rolls are commonly used in the industrial field to process paper, paint, steel, textiles, and rubber materials. Roll lengths range from a few centimeters to six meters or even longer, and over the entire length, highly polished surfaces are required. In actual use, these rolls can provide a high finish for sheet metals without the need for polishing or further grinding.

When the roll is designed for cold forming, then the huge pressure between the workpiece and the roll will cause the roll to bounce off in the center. In this case, if a roll with a completely uniform diameter is used, the thickness of the center of the metal workpiece will become thicker and the thickness of the edges will become thinner.

Therefore, it is necessary to carefully calculate the correct curve of the roll surface before processing. In addition, when performing roll grinding, it should be processed with convexity or convex surface to improve accuracy.

Generally, roll grinders have the ability to rotate the rolls on their own bearings, and may also rotate in the center of the tailstock and headstock. That is why roll grinders can stands out from cylindrical grinders to some extent.

Surface Grinding

Unlike cylindrical grinding and roll grinding, the head of the surface grinder is lowered to the position of the workpiece, which moves back and forth under the grinding wheel on the table. The working table usually has a controllable permanent magnet as a magnetic chuck, which is used to position the magnetic workpiece, and a vacuum chuck or other fixing device can also be used.

The most common surface grinder has a grinding wheel that rotates along a horizontal axis, and the grinding wheel uses its outer periphery for cutting. Rotary surface grinders, commonly referred to as "Blanchard" type grinders have a grinding head that rotates the grinding wheel on an axis perpendicular to the end face of the grinding head, while the worktable rotates the workpiece in the opposite direction below.

This type of machine can remove large amounts of material and grind on flat surfaces with obvious spiral grinding marks, or be used to manufacture and sharpen metal stamping dies and flat scissors. The surface grinder can be operated manually or has a CNC controller.

CNC Controlled Grinding Makes Sure Accuracy

The operating system of the CNC machine is equipped with a humanized operation panel, which can ensure an accurate display of ground movement. The friendly man-machine interface not only ensures accurate operation but also provides great convenience for many users of different conditions.

With modern programming technology, today's grinder operators only need to call the corresponding cutting program from the machine's memory and the machine will process in an appropriate manner.
