Electrode Forged Grating Welding Machine Overview

Posted on Jan 25, 2021

The electroformed rating panels of an electrode forged grating welding machine are typically manufactured to 6000 millimeters long. The panels are then cut based on spans as per users' requirements. The cut panels are then used for welding banding bars. Other tools like notches and toe plates may be added depending on the drawing requirements.

What Is an Electrode Forged Grating Welding Machine?

An electrode forged grating welding machine, commonly known as spot grating welding machine, pressure welded steel grating machine, and steel grating welding machine is an industrial equipment used to make steel gratings for petroleum, chemical, municipal administration, national defense, construction industries, and more. In the following section, we’ll spend a little time discussing the steel grating.

What Is Steel Grating?

Following the above, steel grating is essential to bar grating which consists of individual parallel metal bars that are combined together with perpendicular bars. In the case of steel grating, the grate is formed using grating materials like carbon steel, galvanized steel, and austenitic stainless steel. Generally speaking, the bars are joined by welding processes, and while a variety of welding machines can be used for this, the most economical solution is attributed to the type of steel used and the thickness of the bars. On a side note, aside from the electroforming process, other joining methods for bar grating include close meshing, riveting, press-locking, and swage-locking.

Depending on the type of steel used for the bar grating, a variety of finishes and textures can be achieved, and the spacing between the bars can vary from application to application as well. Bar grating is often used for industrial style flooring because of its superb strength-to-weight ratio and a high margin of open area, eliminating the need for maintenance. Other applications in which bar grating is used include fire escapes, safety fences and gates, grills, bridges, street drains, trailer beds, and ventilation.

How has Electrode Forged Grating Made?

What differentiates an electrode grating welding machine from a conventional spot welder is the distinct welding process. The electroforming process is used to make electro forged gratings. During this process, the square twisted rods, or cross members, are fused into the main load-bearing members using a dedicated welding machine at very high current and tonnage. The cross members are properly set in the load members in a way that it projects out of the grating top member by slightly more than 1 millimeter. This greatly improves the slip resistance during the walking process.

Electrode Forged Grating for Construction Projects

Among the application of electro forged grating welding we touched base above, construction and industrial projects are perhaps where this type of grating is the most widely adopted. The grating, which is obtained by the method of load-bearing and electroformed parallel plates intersected by crossbars, is now a key candidate in creating pedestrian and vehicle traffic surfaces, loading platforms, walkways, landings, steps, and fences.

Qualified grating should have the ability to allow light and air to pass through, accompanied by a high flow rate in relation to low weight, slip-proof surface, easy assembly and disassembly, and fireproof and anti-explosion. Steel grating is able to find its application in many aspects of industrial projects thanks to these characteristics, making it the perfect means for the construction of walkways and fences, power plants, and offshore platforms.

Safety Grating

When making steel grating using the electroforming process, you are likely to undertake safety grating – a type of grating that is utilized as a walking surface to reduce the likeliness of slips and falls by improving traction. Common steels used for safety grating typically include carbon steel, galvanized steel, and austenitic stainless steel.

One notable feature of safety grating is its surface finish that increases grip. As with bar grating, safety grating has many small protrusions, usually in diamond shapes, that improve traction. And just like bar grating, safety grating also has a high margin of open surface, permitting more drainage and airflow. This helps prevents liquid or other materials from accruing to the point where slipping becomes more likely to happen.

Generally speaking, safety grading is made from steel sheets that are cold stamped in various patterns. Grip strut, which may just be one of the most common patterns, consists of diamond-shaped holes which have been perforated through the metal sheet. The outline of diamonds is also serrated so that they can create a high level of traction. The same serrated approach also applies to many other variations and patterns of safety grating. Once cold stamped and perforated, the metal sheet becomes coated with a material that helps reduce the likelihood of falls, slipping, as well as preventing liquids or snow from building up which ultimately create slipping hazards.

Conclusion

With the above said, it is important to note that electro forged grating welding is a type of spot welding, not projection welding. Although projection welding also relies on electrodes to join metal pieces together, it is typically capable of carrying more current than spot welding, making it more ideal for welding thicker materials. Though, they do have a few common grounds, such as the fact that projecting welding is also often used in construction applications because of the superior heat balance compared to other types of welding methods.
