Pneumatic cylinders convert the energy from compressed air to activate a rotary or reciprocating linear motion. Customized pneumatic cylinders are preferred by modern factories to apply in the pneumatic system in automatic machines. Since the activating process is not only quiet and clean but also takes less space for storage of working fluid.
Pneumatic cylinders reduce the risks of contamination since the acting fluid in the pneumatic system is "gas". Air cylinders, in general, play important roles as the actuator in different control systems to generate the driving force through compressed gas. The process including moving the piston to the commanded directions in the pneumatic cylinder.
The piston, the core element in the air cylinder, is a disc attached to the piston rod. It is responsible for transporting the forces to move the target loads in rotary or linear motions. Leakage will not drip out or contaminate other working parts in the machine and ensure a clean working environment. This feature is especially important for food processing applications.
Pneumatic cylinders usually play the role of "actuator" or "motor" in a machine. The actuator is the critical part that guides and controls the working mechanisms in a variety of industrial machines. A simple example is the control system of opening or closing the control valves as well as altering the directions of the flows.
The principle of actuators is the need for signals and energy sources to drive the system accurately. Following are some common energy sources of actuators today: pneumatic pressure, hydraulic pressure, electric current. The signals that guide the actuator can be created by human operation, electric controller, pneumatic pressure, and also hydraulic fluid pressure.
As soon as the actuator in the pneumatic cylinder receives the signals, the compressed air will be converted into force under precise control. Subsequently, the fixed mechanical or electronic operations can be completed. The equipment that utilizes pneumatic cylinders or other styles of the actuator to move loads is considered automatically controlled, which is easy to be found in modern industrial manufacturing lines. One common automatic application using a pneumatic cylinder is the print driver.
The core components of a pneumatic cylinder are the barrel, the piston, the piston rod, the extend port, the tie rod, and the retract port. The diameter of the pneumatic cylinder is defined by the inner diameter of the cylinder or the diameter of the piston. The stroke lengths are determined by the lengths that the piston and the rod travel.
Cylinder diameter and stroke length are important when selecting a pneumatic cylinder. Before choosing a cylinder for motion control, you should understand how a pneumatic cylinder works with these components.
The barrel of the cylinder is an enclosed housing, which is sealed with a head cap and end cap. Houses in the enclosed barrel, the piston can guide the piston rod radially. As the compressed air passes through the extended port, the piston forces the piston rod out, which is known as the “positive movement” or “plus movement” in the air cylinder.
The chamber that works with positive movement is also called the “plus chamber”. When the compressed air enters the retract port, the opposite chamber moves back to the original position.
Control valves are crucial to regulating the gas moving through the ports in pneumatic cylinders. The gas pressure differentials in the system generate the force which multiplies the value of differentials because of the design of the piston. When the force is greater than the loads, the piston and rod can perform the fixed mechanism and move the loads.

Here are two leading pneumatic cylinder manufacturers.
Pneumatic Cylinders & Couplers is a pneumatic cylinder manufacturer that manufactures aluminum and stainless steel cylinders. The company provides pneumatic cylinders made from high-quality materials with proven designs. Aluminum cylinders made by Pneumatic Cylinders & Couplers are light but strong. With a durable design, the affordable cylinder can further save cost because it has longer lifespans. As for the stainless steel cylinders, they have strong resistance to corrosion and provide ideal, consistent performance. Pneumatic Cylinders & Couplers’ products can be applied to packaging, printing equipment, food processing machines, material handling equipment, machine tools, and so on.
Waircom MBS is an Italian company specialized in the production of pneumatic cylinders and other pneumatic accessories. They started the business in 1993. Waircom MBS provides reliable and safe pneumatic cylinder products to industrial manufacturers based in Europe, Asia, and America. Waircom MBS provides U series air cylinder which is the basic version to meet every diameter. The U series equipped with magnetic pistons which are produced from a diameter of 16mm to 25mm. Waircom MBS also provides round pneumatic cylinders, the P series. P series has a round profile with a diameter from 32mm to 63mm.
