The Nuances of Mill Turn and Turn Mill: Look Closer!

A mill turn is perfect for a workshop which wishes to improve manufacturing efficiency.

Mill Turn Machine

A mill turn machine, also known as a CNC turning machine, is a turning method based on which the work piece is rotated along a rotary axis to perform various machining operations, such as cutting, drilling, deformation, and end face machining. These processes are performed by tools applied to the work piece to create objects symmetrical to the axis driven by the primary spindle.

What does Mill Turn mean?

In the past, turning was only performed on the turning machine, while milling was only performed on the milling machine. Due to technical barriers, these two types of cutting methods are difficultly integrated on one machine. With the invention and widespread use of power turrets and power tools, these two functions can be integrated onto one machine, making processing more convenient.

Turn Mill Machines can rotate work pieces for turning, as well as rotating tools for milling and cross-drilling. Turn Mill Machines can have a horizontal or vertical structure and are equipped with spindles for milling and drilling at certain or all tool positions.

The Mill Turn power turret

As we discussed earlier, because of the power turret, the integration of mill turn is thus possible. In this mechanical design, the tool magazine will be accompanied by an automatic tool changer, allowing the tool to work flexibly. Many of these power turrets are driven by a single motor with servo function, which can ensure the best mill turn effects and save the best energy consumption. At the same time, they can also provide great rigidity to the work piece, thus providing the ideal cutting ability.

The rise of Mill Turn

For workshops that want to increase production efficiency, a mill turn is the perfect choice. Through variants, each mill turn can flexibly handle the processing that could only be performed on special machines. In fact, if you do not invest in mill turn, it will be difficult for the processing plant to survive in the modern manufacturing market. In mill turn, since the work piece rotates upward to fulfill the tool, some of the leading force is pushed along the axis of the tool. But in mill turn, where it may belong, slender and supported only at the two ends, it is the tool's axial direction that presents the greater risk of harmful chatter.

The benefits of Mill Turn

Mill turn appears fantastic. Mill turn is made for cutting metal. It can show high quality work results. Suppose you are running a machine with a 12-station turret, and once you start to load each tool, you will understand that the machine does not have enough space to accommodate various required tools. In any case, the mill turn can be turned to make all the necessary items. You can find mill turn machines made by high-end manufacturers and recommended by MTS. Therefore, you can definitely invest in a very high quality mill turn machine.

Moreover, since two separate machines are no longer required to complete different machining tasks on the same work piece, the use of mill turn helps to improve the overall working performance of the entire plant production line. With the ability to perform turning tasks, while also making milling contours possible, this type of machine is mainly based on two basic structures: milling based structure or turning based structure. For these two structures, the subtle differences make the working procedure different in many ways, but the final output can be the same.
