After the workpieces are transferred, the chip conveyors will also discard or recycle the metal chips which are left for further use. Chip conveyors are a type of conveyor system which serves a very important role for the machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines.

What Are Chip Conveyors?

Chip conveyors can be categorized as the auxiliary equipment for different kinds of machine tools. Chip conveyors are widely adopted for various applications due to the ability to remove chips or scraps from the working area, which facilitates smoother operation procedures. From the perspective of precision machining, chip conveyors are the necessary devices that manufacturers should invest, since they can prevent unwanted results, such as tool deflection or the deformation of end products, from occurring during the machining process.

The parts which comprised the body of chip conveyors include, the front chain guard, torque limiter assembly, inside chain guard, belt sprocket, driveshaft, and bearing cover. All these components working harmoniously will lead to the smooth function of the chip conveyors. There is another part that is important for all types of the conveyor system, the belt. The two common types of belt systems on chip conveyors may be the hinge belt or scraper belt.

A Deeper Look into the Chip Conveyor System

The conveyor systems can be applied to several different industries these days. The main purpose of the conveyor system is to transport objects from one point to another or to move materials by a certain distance. Just as I mentioned earlier, the conveyor system can be applied to several types of industries, as people typically used them to transport objects in fields such as industrial, mining, commercial, pharmaceuticals, packaging, and truck loading. 

In general, the conveyor system can provide several advantages when engaging in industrial processing work. For example, the conveyor system can be located, or set up, at practically any location that people want them to be. Besides, there are plenty of ways when it comes to installing the conveyor system. In other words, it is easy to install and the installation can be done even by the manufacturers themselves. In some cases, when people have demanded a more elaborated model of the conveyor system, the conveyor system can also be installed to make sure that it fits into the system of the buyer. Owing to such features, the conveyor system is capable of being installed wherever possible. Therefore, it explains the reason why the conveyor systems are so popular in different types of industries.


Types of chip conveyors

Based on the fundamental ability chip conveyors have, the collection of each one of them should be precise and appropriate, in order to permit the optimal performance of these devices. As this is realized, each model of the chip conveyors would be able to enhance the working efficiency and productivity of the relevant machine tools depending on their requirements. There are three types of chop conveyors available on the markets, including hinge chip conveyors, scraper chip conveyors, and magnetic chip conveyors.


● Hinge Chip Conveyors

The first type of chip conveyors is the hinge chip conveyors. The hinge conveyors or sometimes also referred to as the hinge-belt chip conveyors. They are considered to be equipped with the most common format. In general, the hinge chip conveyors are capable of providing effective methods of managing heavy chip loads and stringy chips. 

The hinge chip conveyor works as chips fall from the machine tool to the hinge belt system. The conveyor belt will then move away from the chips, which are produced during the machining process of the workpieces from the precision surface of the machine tool. 


● Scraper Chip Conveyors

The scraper chip conveyors, on the other hand, are a type of conveyor system that is commonly used for machining materials such as cast iron, bronze, or brass. These materials tend to produce the smaller chips that can nest together. 

The process of actuating a scraper chop conveyor is similar to that of the hinge type. After the chips are located on the bottom of the conveyors, the scrapers will start to drag the debris, which is located on the bottom of the conveyors to the discharge end of the conveyors.


● Magnetic Chip Conveyors

The magnetic chip conveyors are a type of conveyor system that is specially designed for ferrous material applications with small chips. The process of conveying starts as chips fall onto the conveyor's stainless steel surface. The chips will then be transported by powerful magnets, which are mounted beneath the stationary plates to help attract ferrous materials such as irons, nickels, and steels. Once the chips are removed from the working area, they would be transported to the discharge end of the system, and then passed through the collection container.
