What Is a Pneumatic Cylinder Actuator?

Posted on Jan 4, 2021

Pneumatic cylinder actuator

Pneumatic cylinder actuators provide linear motion or rotary motion to automated systems, machines, and processes. They can achieve the force and generate accurate linear and rotary motion in a relatively simple way.

Pneumatic cylinder actuators do not weigh much. They do not require much maintenance. They produce less force and have a relatively slower speed when compared to hydraulic systems or electric systems. That said, they are a cost-effective alternative.

How does the pneumatic cylinder actuator work?

Within the pneumatic cylinder actuator, there are parts such as the end cap, the piston, the piston rod, the cylinder barrel, the wiper seal, the cushion sleeve, and the seal. Some pneumatic cylinder actuators are single-acting and can be operated with a button. The air will then move the piston rod outward when the button is pushed. The pneumatic systems utilized the air which has been compressed to create the rotary or the linear motion and power to do the work. The pneumatic cylinder actuator is the type of device which is like the pneumatic system, utilizing compressed air to power the piston inside the cylinder in order to create the force or the motion which is required.

Types of Pneumatic Cylinder Actuator

● A single-acting pneumatic cylinder actuator :

A single-acting pneumatic cylinder actuator is equipped with one port, where the air will enter and push the piston in only one direction. After the process, the piston will return to its original position by a spring that is equipped in the system. A single-acting pneumatic cylinder has a stroke length that is limited. It is better to use the single-acting pneumatic cylinder actuator for slower operations. The pneumatic cylinder actuator also does not use a lot of air which will, in turn, achieve greater efficiency and having lower operating costs.

● A double-acting pneumatic cylinder actuator:

A double-acting pneumatic cylinder actuator on the other hand has two ports. These two ports work in the opposite direction. The ports will allow the pressure to be applied, so the piston can be pulled in the opposite direction of the one created by the first port. These actions are sometimes referred to as the in-stroke and the outstroke. In general, if the pneumatic cylinder actuator is larger, the greater the force can be output.

Applications of Pneumatic Cylinder Actuator

The pneumatic cylinder actuator can be applied to a lot of industries. For example, they can be utilized in the automation systems of the factories. The pneumatic cylinder actuator can also be used in the operations such as clamping. In the process of clamping, the workpiece will be held in the right position by the jaws which are operated by the cylinder. There is also punching, it is a place where the thrust from the single-acting pneumatic cylinder actuator can be used to brand an object.
