A power chuck is an automatic tool or work holder. The power chuck holds the cutter or workpiece in place during the operation of different machining works like drilling, milling, or turning, etc., in order to stabilize the tools or workpieces and optimize the results.
Before discussing the power chuck, we have to first understand what a chuck is. A chuck is a specialized device that is used to hold the object, like a clamp. Manual chucks are often compared with power chucks. The manual chuck is the type of chuck which is suitable for the process of the lathing or milling of the workpieces. Besides, the manual chuck is also the type of chuck which is considered to be the most versatile.
In general, the manual chuck can allow the operator to manually adjust the jaws, which will in turn let the operator grab on a wide variety of the workpieces. Another advantage of the manual chuck is that the clamping pressure is adjustable. This allows the workpieces with relatively thin walls to be fully secured for the process of milling or turning without damaging the workpieces by the chuck.
However, there are also several limitations when it comes to installing manual chuck. When compared with the power chuck, the manual chuck is the type of chuck which is more suitable for the applications which come with the traits of having low-volume and higher precision. On the other hand, the power chuck is considered to be the type of chuck that can be applied to applications with a high volume, since it is capable of clamping and releasing the workpieces at much faster speeds, which makes the high-volume production much easier.
