What Is Electrofusion Welding Machine?

Posted on Feb 2, 2021

An electrofusion welding machine is a type of resistance welding machine that is utilized for combining workpieces by making the implanted coils melted and solidified, and form consistent joints on the target areas.

What Is an Electrofusion Welding Machine?

An electrofusion welding machine is one type of welding machine that is commonly applied in construction or gas industries. Electrofusion welding is a welding technique that is commonly used to join different parts of plastic pipes. The process of electrofusion welding can also be categorized as a form of resistive implant welding.

Electrofusion welding machines can create seals between the gaps on the workpieces with the implanted metal coils being placed around both ends of pipes. Then the electric current will be applied through the coils. As an electric current is given, it generates heat on the coils. Then the heat would melt the parts where the joints are supposed to be on the workpieces. Once the parts start to solidify, the process is complete.

As mentioned earlier, electrofusion welding is a welding technique that is commonly used to join different parts of workpieces, especially plastic pipes. The materials of the plastic pipes can be polyethylene or polypropylene. As a matter of fact, the process of electrofusion welding is the most common welding technique which is used to join the PE pipes.

Pros and Cons of Electrofusion Welding Machine

There are several advantages regarding the utilization of electrofusion welding. For example, electrofusion welding is considered to be a simple process that can produce consistent joints. Also, it can reduce the risk of joint contamination. Since electrofusion welding machines are able to create strong and consistent joints, they are often applied for construction or repairing gas-carrying pipelines.

On the other hand, there are also several limitations of electrofusion welding machines. For instance, sleeves are required for the electrofusion welding process, which thus results in the expensive cost the manufacturers should afford. Besides, the implanted coils which are added during the process have made the recycling of the parts a lot more difficult.

How Does an Electrofusion Welding Machine Form?

An electrofusion welding machine is a type of resistance welding machine that is utilized for combining workpieces by making the implanted coils melted and solidified, and form consistent joints on the target areas.

The electrofusion welding machine will weld the pipes as the fittings that are placed around the joint area to be welded. Soon later, the metal coils will be implanted into the fittings, and there will be an electric current running through the coils to generate the heat, melting the part of the pipes, and forming a joint upon the solidification.

The fittings which are utilized by the electrofusion welding machine can be categorized into two main types, the coupler fitting, and the saddle. In general, the coupler fittings include two separate regions of coils, which are capable of creating two distinct fusion zones during welding. It is very common for the inner diameter of the coupler to be a bit larger than the outer diameter of the pipes. Such a feature is to help increase the ease of forming the assembly in the field and minimize inconsistencies in the pipe diameter. As for the saddle, it is a type of fitting which is very rare. The saddle will generally require sufficient clamping force to ensure a proper fit up with the pipes.

There are currently several different models of electrofusion welding machines available in the industries. Each of them is possessed with its own trait and unique ability. For example, there are some models of electrofusion welding machines,  which are suitable for welding pipe or fittings for the transportation of the gas, water, and fire sprinkler system. There are also others that are equipped with the complete fusion range and the multi-functioning touch screen with the automatic control and manual fusion range.

Other Types of Welding Machines

Electrofusion welding machines are just categorized into one type of welding machine. There are several different types of the welding machine available in the industries, such as the butt welding machines In general, the butt welding machine is the type of the machine tool which can provide powerful, easy and serial welding with the shortest set-up operation in accordance.

Another type of welding machine called the projection nut welding machine is also commonly used for different applications. There are three phases in the process of projection nut welding. First of all, the projection will be put in direct contact with the mating sheet. Then the electric current will start to heat up the projection, so the desired welding temperature can be achieved. After the right temperature is achieved, the electrode force will then cause the heated projection to collapse rapidly, and generate the fusion.
