The Benefit of Turning Spindle

The lathe spindle is one of the most important rotational mechanical components, used to hold and drive the work piece on the lathe. The driving power of the spindle varies with different structural designs, and most turning spindles are built-in type, others are belt driven type, and have a variety of blueprint configurations.

Why Do I Need A Turning Spindle. What Is the Benefit of It. And How It Works?

Turning Spindle

The lathe spindle is one of the most important rotational mechanical components, used to hold and drive the work piece on the lathe. The driving power of the spindle varies with different structural designs, and most turning spindles are built-in type, others are belt driven type, and have a variety of blueprint configurations. The driving mechanism of the spindle is different due to different processing requirements. For example, the cartridge assembly is placed in a fixed space, and the angled spindle is designed to allow rotation within a specific angle.

Some machine tool spindles are installed in a solid block or box-shaped housing, and some are fixed on the machine with flanges or feet. Most machine tool spindles used for cutting are designed with tapers. Sometimes, it is necessary to use multiple spindle heads to speed up the processing and perform repeated precision machining, such as precision center hole machining, which are regarded as variables of the final output of the machine.

Turning spindles and lathe spindles

The difference between the turning spindle and the lathe spindle is not significant. Most of the past lathes were equipped with belt driven spindles, because the structure of such spindles is very simple, and there are not many options on the market. The belt driven spindle has many excellent characteristics and is easy to maintain. Even though there are more spindle types available for machine tool manufacturers today, belt driven spindles are still very popular. On the other hand, electric spindles are more popular in high-end and advanced lathes, such as turning centers with power turrets and some turning and milling centers with multiple spindles on the front and back. Belt driven spindle and electric spindle have their own advantages, suitable for different machines.

The design of the housing used to install the spindle can be very complicated. The design of the spindle housing not only needs to consider the function, the compatibility with the machinery, but also the cost. Buyers need to choose the ideal solution within their budget.

Special spindles for specific arrangement

The arrangement of spindles of vertical lathe and horizontal lathe is basically the same, but there are subtle differences. A vertical lathe, also called a vertical turning machine, is a machine tool that rotates a work piece on a rotating axis to perform various machining operations, such as cutting, knurling, grinding, drilling, deforming, end machining, and turning. These processes are performed by tools applied to the work piece to create objects symmetrical to the axis driven by the spindle. Under normal circumstances, according to the way of clamping work pieces or tools, lathes can be divided into two main types, namely vertical lathes and horizontal lathes. These two structures account for 99% of the total number of lathe machines.

Vertical spindle arrangement

In a vertical lathe, the work piece is clamped vertically, and the cutting tool or the entire cutting device is installed in the same direction, so the processing is performed vertically. Compared with horizontal lathes, this way of clamping is stronger due to the effect of gravity. Manufacturers of vertical lathes usually optimize vertical lathes to high-precision production equipment, which is commonly used in the automotive industry, aerospace sector, sports equipment manufacturing, and other fields with larger-sized work pieces.

The vertical clamping mechanism and the spindle of the vertical lathe are also located behind the chuck. The spindle can be belt driven or other types of driving mechanisms, such as direct driven and gear driven. Like a milling machine and a machining center, a lathe can also be equipped with power tools and tool magazines to improve its functionality and versatility, thereby providing greater processing possibilities for machine users.

What makes it versatile?

The spindle is the heart of the machine tool. But not only does the body have a heart, it must also contain other parts to function. Among them, the power turret is like a hand that can complete many complex tasks. This is a modern standard accessory for many CNC lathes, and it is also one of the most powerful accessories. There are many manufacturers in Taiwan dedicated to power turrets and power tools. The products and services of these manufacturers can meet the intelligent manufacturing needs of users of turning machine tools worldwide.

Turret and spindle

The power turret is mostly driven by a single motor with servo function. Thanks to the excellent functions of the servo motor, the power turret can ensure the best processing results and save energy consumption. Some of these motors are brushless type. They can provide great rigidity of the work piece and excellent machining repeatability.
