Clamping Nut

Introduction of Clamping Nut

Clamping nut is a kind of mechanical fastener used in holding two or more mating objects together tightly and securely when it is required to apply strong power on the specific items.

The clamping nuts would often be used in a combination with screws and bolts. The surface of the screws and bolts contain helical grooves which allows the clamping nut to go along with the grooves.

Moreover, the surface of the clamping nut is usually smooth, and the diameter of the bottom surface is usually larger than the body is. Therefore, clamping nuts can maintain uniform clamping force when the nut is tightened.

Standard adjustable wrenches, ratchet wrenches, or torque wrenches would be necessary to use while crewing the clamping nuts since they have to be screwed tightly.

The clamping nut forms a unit by the consisting of an outer ring which has a conical bore, and inner ring which contains a conical outer surface and a female thread.

When tightening the clamping nut by wrenches, the two conical surfaces would move against each other and screw together by the power of friction which makes the slotted inner ring become narrow like a collet. Thus, the clamping nut itself would be locked tightly.

Properties of Clamping Nuts

Self-locking
Most clamping nuts are designed self-locked even with changing direction of rotation of the shaft.

● Easy to Install and Dismantle
This does not mean by hand since the clamping nuts cannot be manually installed and moved easily by hands.

However, if done by wrenches, it would be pretty easy to install or dismantle clamping nuts because the surface of those nuts is smooth enough.

Able to be Clamped Repetitively
Since the clamping nuts are mostly made of hard metals, like steel, stainless steel, or brass, it is strong enough to be used repetitively. In other words, they have long lifespans.

Types of Clamping Nuts

Hexagonal clamping nut is the most commonly used type of clamping nuts. Clamping nut in this design is a universal type that does not require high-precision dimensional tolerances.

The hexagonal profile and cylindrical bottom portion of this design allow the clamping nuts stably secured the screws of bolts on the item they should stay on.

Moreover, once tightened, clamp nuts in this design would be difficult to loosen without applying very high torque because of its high grip.

Materials of Clamping Nuts

Clamping nuts can be made from various metals depending on the demands of different functions.

Below would list two main demands that are commonly enhanced by industries when choosing the material to make clamping nuts. However, it does not mean a specific group is the lake of the property another contains. Features of each are properties that are enhanced.

● Corrosion Resistance
In this group of clamping nuts, the ability of corrosion resistance is enhanced for some reason. Also, clamping nuts in this group can also perform well on screwing in high strength.

In some situations, the fasteners are required to be corrosion resistant because of safety purposes. As the first one to contact the outer environment, clamping nuts would be especially required to perform well in this feature.

Industries or environments that require fasteners being corrosion resistant would be construction industry, aerospace industry, transportation manufacture industries, fasteners used on chemicals delivery pipes in factories, etc.

To fulfill the need, manufacturers of these industries would tend to choose clamping nuts made of hard metals like steel, stainless steel, or brass.

High-Strength Applications
Same situation with the clamping nuts that are grouped in enhancing corrosion resistance, clamping nuts categorized in the group to be high strength application also contains the ability of corrosion resistance in some level.

Providing high strength is the basic capability of the clamping nuts since they are designed to do so. Therefore, clamping nuts made of any hard metals or alloys contain the capability of high-strength application, but the metal alloys would provide higher strength because alloys are made of advantages of original metals.

For the purpose of high-strength application, metal alloys would be a good choice of making clamping nuts.

Applications of Clamping Nuts

Since clamping nuts is a kind of useful fastener that can help to stable the screws and bolts on the item they should be.

From industries to families, clamping nuts can be variously applied in many fields, for example, home appliances, automotive engines, and the assembly of high-precision tools and dies.

In conclusion, clamping nuts are widely used almost everywhere.

Besides features of usefulness, price is another decisive reason for manufacturers and consumers to choose clamping nuts. It is because clamping nuts in general (not used in industries) would not cost too much.

Cost of Applying Clamping Nuts

Price of clamping nuts can be between a wide range. The cost of a clamp nuts depend on designs, the material used, and the level of dimensional tolerances required to meet the end-use requirements.
