What is an angle dresser?

An angle dresser, also known as a radius and angle dresser, is a grinding wheel dressing machine, which is applied for sharpening the grinding wheels after they are used and become dull. The angle dresser, as the name implies, is able to allow the dressing tool to dress the grinding wheels with the desired angle or on the radius of the wheel instead of the whole diameter by adjustment.

The invention of the angle dressers can be derived from the standard diamond dressers, which can be dressing rolls, sticks, or boards. The standard diamond dressers are the conventional dressing tools, which are made of diamond materials and also specialized in sharpening the grinding wheels.

However, with the standard diamond dressers, the angle or the dressing parts on the grinding wheels are fixed, which means that one tool can only dress the grinding wheels on a certain pattern. While the grinding wheels are designed with various forms in order to achieve the different requirements of surface grinding. Therefore, using the standard diamond dressers requires the operators to alter the angle of the tool manually when it is necessary.

The grinding wheels are the tools that assist the refining of the metal products by grinding the surfaces of them, in order to remove the burrs or other parts that are not supposed to be shown on the final products. A grinding wheel is made of abrasive grains that are connected with the bonds. As the abrasive grains come in contact with the workpieces, the abrasive grains can help reveal the smooth surfaces, which meet the requirements of the customers.

As the diverse need of the products that are supposed to undergo the grinding process increases so as to attain the refining of the surfaces, the conventional form of the wheel cannot fit for every kind of workpiece. In other words, these wheels are designed with a variety of forms and shapes in order to accommodate the diversity of the need.

To achieve the dressing of the various grinding wheels, which is to help them become sharp again, using the standard dressers does work, but it actually takes a lot of time and effort to do so. Thus, the angle dressers are invented. With an angle dresser, the diamond dressers that are held on the machine can be adjusted to the desired angles with the slide on the machine, which eliminates the need of alignment and the limit of the operators’ hands. In addition, the convenience of the alternation helps enhance the efficiency of the dressing works on this machine.

How does an angle dresser form?

The main elements of an angle dresser contain a base, several screws, a slide, a tool holder, and the diamond dresser, which incorporate each other to perform the functions of this machine.

● Base
The base of the angle dresser carries the other components, and supports the slide on above when it is adjusted with different angle and holds the diamond dresser during the processes.

● Screws
The screws on this machine are the key to adjust the angle of the dresser. There are several screws that are arranged on different parts of the machine, which allows them to be loosened during the adjustment, and tightened when the desired angles of the parts are decided.

● Slide
The slide is used to support the tool holder and the tools on the tip of it when it is necessary to adjust the grinding angles.

● Tool holder/ diamond dresser
On the tip of the slide, there may be a tool holder that holds interchangeable diamond dressers, or only the diamond dressers. Depending on the angle of the slide, the tool holder and diamond dresser is able to contact the workpieces at the preset angle and does the grinding work.

How to use an angle dresser?

1. Decide the dressing tool
Before dressing a grinding wheel, decide the dressing tool based on the required form of the wheel is the first thing to do.

2. Turn off coolant pump and set up dust extractor
Dressing a grinding wheel doesn’t require coolant, so it can be turned off during the processes. However, the principle of dressing is to remove the abrasive grains that are not sharp enough from the wheel, there must be chips or dust produced when the tool contacts the wheel. Therefore, preparing the dust extractor before the process is an important thing as well.

3. Adjust the angle of the angle dresser
Based on the parts of the grinding wheel that have to be dressed, adjust the angle of the dresser by turning the screws on the components.

4. Turn on the grinding function
Once the settings are all done, turn on the grinding machine to turn the grinding wheels, so as to allow the dressing tool to dress on the wheel at the desired radius and angle.

5. Repeat the above processes
In order to ensure the optimal outcome of the dressing work, apply the above processes on the grinding wheel for a few times, and the grinding wheel can be successfully sharpened.
