A dressing board, also known as a dressing plate, is a type of dressing tools that is used to re-sharpen the cutting tools, which are used for grinding, dicing, or sawing, for example.
The dressing board can effectively deal with the glazing or shedding problems that are occurred as the cutting tools get dull, and make the tools return to what they are supposed to be.
The term dressing in the industrial fields is neither about covering the components or accessories with the coatings when they don’t work, nor literally about wrapping them with clothes. In fact, for the industrial purpose, dressing refers to the sharpening of the tools instead.
The wearing of tools may seem to be something that cannot be more normal. However, for the manufacturers, this would result in several problems that influence the machining process as well as the products that are presented to the customers.
During the machining processes, the cutting tools play important roles in separating the workpieces and refining the works that have been machined. The former divided the larger workpiece into smaller pieces, in order to accommodate to the machining requirements.
As for the latter, when the smaller pieces of works have been machined, they have to be refined to achieve the perfection of the products, which is the process to customize depending on the required geometries as the customers want.
These processes should all be conducted with the cutting tools. The wearing of the tools may seem to be something that cannot be more normal, while it is actually what affect the performance of the machining works and the perfection of the final products.
Therefore, when the above situation happens, the manufacturers would apply the dressing board to allow the wearing tools to be as sharp as what they used to be, so as to improve the performance of the tools and refine the products much more effectively.
As far as we know, the dressing board is dedicated to sharpen the wearing tools that are used in the machining works, since that if the tools become dull, they cannot perform their works as well as the new ones.
During the separating of the workpieces, the diamond blade would be applied to conduct the sawing or dicing procedures, which are both adopted for making cut through the larger materials and make them become parts. This requires the definite sharpness of the diamond blade, or it is not able to successfully cut the workpieces off.
As for the refining process, it refers to the deburring on the works that have been machined. At that time, the grinding wheels would be applied. The grinding wheels are the grinding tools with wheel-like abrasives, which rotate rapidly on the workpieces to remove the excessive burrs. Also, once the abrasive wheels are flattened, they would not work well.
When these tools work on the workpieces, they would have difficulty cutting through the workpieces, or deflecting out off the right tracks, which thus cause the deformation of the products in the end.
In short, the cutting or grinding tools include the diamond blades and the grinding wheels can both benefit from the dressing board, since this instrument is capable of helping them regain the optimal performance back.
A dressing board is made of abrasive materials, usually silicon carbide, which is, like the principle of the grinding wheel, to allow the tools to be fed into the abrasives, in order to refine the edges of the tools, and achieve the sharpening of the tools.
To use a dressing board to sharpen a cutting tool, what you should prepare are the dressing board, the cutting tool, and the machine that the tool is applied for. During the dressing process, the dressing board and the tool would also contact with each other closely at a high speed, so there should be coolant that is provided on the working site as well.
While compared to the original machining works, the requirement of the coolant in the dressing of a tool would be less. Therefore, you should adjust the flow of the coolant before everything starts.
Next, keep the tool turning, but fix the route where the tool moves during the machining works, and you can see the static tool that rotates on where it is. Once the setting is done, you can start the dressing process.
Place the dressing board on the working table, where the workpieces are supposed to be on. When the tool is rotating, push and feed the dressing board toward the bottom of the tool, and move the dressing board back and forth for several times.
Until every part of the edges on the tool is dressed and sharpened, the dressing work is done. After that, examine is the tool can perform as before by adjusting the machine to the original setting, and replacing the dressing board with a workpiece, in order to see if the tool becomes sharp again.
