Wheel Balancing Stand

What is Wheel Balancing Stand?

Wheel balancing stand, which is also called a grinding wheel balancing stand, is the accessory that is designed to control the vibrations on the grinding wheels. It can automatically detect and compensate for the imbalance with respect to the parallelism, concentricity, tolerance, dressing, and also the wear of the grinding wheel. Wheel balancing can improve the quality produced by grinding machines, especially enhance the quality of surface finishes and geometry in trilobate and ovality forms. Most wheel balancing stands are suitable for grinding machines that are centerless, flexible, external and surface types. A static grinding wheel balancing stand is available for grinding wheels with large diameters up to 35 centimeters.

The Procedure of Wheel Balancing

For starters, take the grinding wheel off and install the balancing arbor. Next, you can place the grinding wheel on the wheel balancing stand. After removing the weights and turning the arbor, mark the point that the arbor is facing up when the wheels stop. Subsequently, put the weights back and tighten the flanges. The wheel should be moved to the position until the mark is at one o’clock position, and the weights should be moved for aligning the correct position. Finally, you can remove the balancing arbor and spin the wheel to check the balance and whether there is little vibration.

What Are Grinding Wheels?

Grinding wheels are used in a variety of grinding machines and are made from abrasive compounds. They are utilized for various abrasive cutting and grinding applications. The typical materials from which the grinding wheels are made are  composite material. It is the bonding of the coarse particles by the cementing matrix, creating a solid and circular shape. There are also grinding wheels made from steels or aluminum discs, and other particles for grinding.

With the rise and development of grinding manufacturing, most grinding wheels manufactured today are made from artificial composites to increase efficiency and save money. The production process of grinding wheels requires high precision and tight control during every step and the inspections. This is because the potential safety risks, the uniformity and composition should all be taken into consideration during the rotation with high pressures. The life of grinding wheels can vary widely from different uses and materials. It might less than few days or more than years with regular adjustment and checks. The wear is inevitable as the grinding wheel cuts, and the abrasive particles might be periodically pulled out from the bond in the wear process because the wheel becomes duller and duller.

Why Use Wheel Balancing Stand?

With the development in industrial manufacturing, the rotation speed of grinding wheels/spindles in grinders is increasing in recent trends. The goal is to achieve ideal surface finishes at the same time. To produce with such high level performance brings vibrations caused by the imbalance of moving parts. The grinding wheel should therefore be monitored.

Some operators dress their grinding tools for optimal use since the wheel can only sharpen itself to a small degree. However, the function and benefits of dressing are not equivalent to ones of wheel balancing. Dressing refers to the process of removing the current outer layer of abrasives. The work surface that is exposed to the products will therefore be sharper and fresh again. Truing the grinding wheel can enhance the parallelism of the grinding surface to the table, and the wheels can produce even more precisely. It is important for operators to check the vibration of the wheel by balancing the stand otherwise it might substantially affect the operations even with regular dressing.

Grinding wheels are vital components to perform accurate or tough grinding for a wide range of applications. With the wheel balancing stand, the vibration and the alignment can be adjusted, ensuring the accuracy and high quality in the grinding process. For example, grinding in medical industry translate to the production of surgical drills, needles, dental drill parts; in mold and die industry, grinding are required to produce thread dies, draw dies, mold inserts and so on; in machine tool manufacturing, it helps with spindles, ball screws, linear guideways, rotary table to perform metal machining. In the aerospace industry and heavy metalworking, grinding also plays an important role for machining tough materials which might be difficult for conventional tools. The work easily increases the wheel wear, which should be regulated with the wheel balancing stand. Wheel balancing stands can prolong the life of the standard grinding wheel, makes the equipment and the workers safer. Also, it eliminates the need for replacing the consumable wheels often by balancing, which reduces the cost and guarantees the stability of production and product quality.
