Lifters may refer to a bunch of industrial lifting machines that are used to carry things during the industrial operation. Most heavy duty lifters are activated by hydraulic mechanisms since hydraulic lifters can offer steady and powerful forces onto the lifted objects so the lifting process can be carried on nice and safe.

Some of the lifters are movable while some may be fixed. For the lifters with mobility, onsite operators can drive those lifters moving around the working area such as the manufacturing plants to move raw materials, waste materials, semi products, products, etc. Here the present article will introduce some well known lifters.


Forklift is also called lift trucks. This type of mobile lifter is a powered industrial truck that we often see in the plants. They are usually used to lift and move materials over short distances rather than longer areas. The development of forklift was carried on in the early 20th century by various companies due to the booming of the economy and manufacturing sector then.

Later, since Second World War, the application and study of the movable forklift truck have largely expanded to the worldwide market as the civilization integration merged and people all over the world were acting to improve their local industry with forklift and other equipment that could make their efforts easier. With this global trend of forklifts, these movable vehicles had become an indispensable facility of industrial equipment in the manufacturing site as well as in the warehousing fields.

Compared with other light weight lifters, forklifts are recognized as the maximum short distance lifter in the industry. This type of lifters is ranked for their bearing loads at a specific maximal weight loads, and a specific forward center of the gravity as it is designed. That critical information is put on a name plate offered by the lifter manufacturer, and their loads must not exceed the specifications specified. 

In many formal cases, it is illegal to change the name plate without the formal permission of the forklift manufacturer through a standard procedure. A forklift operation must have rear wheel steering functionality, and this could increase the maneuverability in tight cornering situations which usually happen in the manufacturing sites due to the space issues. It is different from a common driver’s ordinary experience with conventional wheeled vehicles such as normal cars. While they are steering, since there is no caster action, it is not necessary to apply steering force to keep a constant ratio of turn. 

The control of the forklifts is not easy and must be trained; for there are even different powers sources activate forklifts so that drivers must be well trained before they drive such vehicles. For instance, forklift hydraulics is the most common type, which are controlled with levers which are directly manipulating the hydraulic valves. However, they may also be controlled by electrically managed actuators, which use small finger levers for the control of the vehicle. The electrically controlled version permits forklift developers with more freedom in the ergonomic design due to the great flexibility. 


Crane lifters are much more stable compared to forklifts. The thing is structurally sturdy since often they are fixed at a certain point that are quite rigid, such as overhead position. An overhead crane is commonly named a bridge crane. This is a type of crane machine that can be easily found in the industrial environments and manufacturing plants. An overhead crane is consisted of parallel runways with a traveling bridge structure that spans the gap structure. On the overhead crane, a hoist is an important part. This is the lifting component of overhead cranes and travels along the bridge structure, offering a working axis just like the axes of the machine tools.

If the bridge structure is rigidly supported on two or even more legs running on a fixed rail at the ground level, the overhead crane is thus named as a gantry crane. The term gantry usually means very strong and powerful rigidity of the machinery and some milling based machine tools with bridge may also called gantry type milling machines. The gantry type models are often designed for heavy duty operation no matter it is a lifter crane or milling machines or machining centers. However, the loading capacity in detail shall be carefully read before use since there would be some differences exists between different models.
