A sine plate is a tool that used in measuring works. It is usually used to accurately measure the angle or straightness of a part that is not flat to begin with. Sometimes would be used with sine bars.
A compound sine plate works like a sine plate. However, the difference is that the compound style can set multiple angles at the same time.
Moreover, these kinds of measuring tools are fordable and adjustable. Therefore, the users can raise an end to the necessary height and orient the object or part in a parallel manner. With this function, the measuring task would be easier to complete.
Usually, compound sine plates are made of hard metals, usually alloys or stainless steel.
When doing grinding work, the compound sine plate can help to set the right angles. Moreover, since the sine plate is made of hard metals, it can maintain dent free that can be used longer.
When measuring angles with the compound sine plate, compensating for the first angle set is important and necessary for the reason of correctly setting the second angle.
Below are steps of setting angles with the compound sine plate:
1. Firstly, it is important to determine the top plate center distance of the device, the bottom plate center distance, the required angle of the workpiece angles – both the first one and the second one, and the measuring method of the angle (whether it is degrees-minutes-seconds or decimal degrees).
2. Then, calculate the right angle and then set the stacks of gage blocks in right sizes between the three compound sine plates to stable the two angles. Thus, the angle would be accurate and matched to the angles required because the units of the stack will match the units of the center distance.
3. Finally, the compound sine plate is now set to obtain the required angles in their respective planes on the workplace.
The compound angles are important key points when using the compound sine plates. Under the purpose of being accurate, calculating of angles on the compound sine plate should be perfectly correct because once one of the two angles goes wrong, the whole compound angles would be different from the original set.
According to the professionals, there are four steps to accurately calculate compound angles.
Step 1: Measure the Sides
The first step of accurately calculating compound angles is measuring the three sides for each of two right triangles because they are important elements to form the compound angle.
When measuring, it is required to measure the side, opposite side, and the hypotenuse of the two triangles made by the compound sine plate then record the six numbers you got.
Step 2: Calculate the Sine and Cosine for the First Angle
For a clearer description, there we would call the triangle made by the first angle as “A”.
There are two formulas for calculating:
● sine A = opposite side A / hypotenuse A
● cosine A = adjacent side A / hypotenuse A
Then, record the results from the two formulas for later usage.
Step 3: Calculate the Sine and Cosine for the Second Angle
Same as the first angle, for a clearer description, there we would call the triangle made by the second angle as “B”.
There are also two formulas for calculating:
● sine B = opposite side B / hypotenuse B
● cosine B = adjacent side B / hypotenuse B
Also, record the results from the two formulas for later usage.
Step 4: Calculate the Compound Angle A and B
This step would be a little bit more complex than the calculation applying on Step 2 and Step 3.
You have to replace the sine and cosine for angle A and angle B in the compound angle formula.
Then the formula would become:
sin (A+B) = (opposite side a / hypotenuse a)(adjacent side b / hypotenuse b) + (adjacent side a / hypotenuse a)(opposite side b / hypotenuse b).
It is suggested using a calculator to take the inverse sine of the sum of the two products to find the compound angles because the answer must be accurate without any mistakes.

Step 5: Apply the Calculated Results onto the Compound Sine Plate
After the calculating results is shown, you may apply them on the compound singe plate for following measures.
For the purpose of accurate machining, the using of compound sine plate as an assist tool is undoubtedly necessary because workpieces need to be set with specific angles would need more accurate helping tools to complete the measuring.
If the angle is incorrect, it would cause problems or even the risk of crash on workpieces or even tool machines.
