2PC ball valves are one of the most common ball valve types today. Its name derives directly from the structure: one joint that connects two body pieces. Compared with the 1 piece ball valves and the 3 piece ball valves, a 2 piece ball valve allows a large ball inside the valve body. This very feature grants several advantages to the machine. Before introducing the advantages, let's first take a look at its construction.
Though called 2PC ball valves, they are actually constructed with more than 2 parts. The major components of a 2PC ball valve include the ball, the body, the end piece, and the stem. These parts are mostly made of stainless steel because this material assures long service life and prevents oxidation.
The ball locates at the joint where the body piece and the end piece connect. The borehole in the ball is the main channel where fluid flows through. The diameter of the borehole is usually as large as the ports of the 2 pieces. On the two borehole ends sit the seats. The seats are the rubber (or plastic) rings that lie between the two pieces and the ball.
The body piece and end piece together contain the ball. There are flanges on these two pieces. The flanges provide the pieces with assembly points. With the assembly points, these two pieces are threaded/bolted together. However, some 2PC ball valves have the 2 pieces welded in manufacturing as well.
The stem connects to the ball and sticks out of the valve body. It serves as the only approach to control the ball. For a manual ball valve, a handlebar is fixed onto the stem. The ports are open/close as the stem spins. The open and close to different degrees are called throttling. It is a simple mechanism that controls the flow rate.
In addition to the manually controlled piping systems, 2 piece ball valves are sometimes involved in the automatically controlled systems. In such cases, the open/close of the valves is not controlled by human operators but computers. The simple design makes it versatile in both manual and automated applications.
The main advantage this type of ball valve has is that it can work with a larger ball. A large ball guarantees a full borehole (full port). A full bore indicates that the hole has the same diameter as the piping system's diameter it links to. With the full borehole, the pressure drop is no longer an issue. The flow rate will not be affected too.
Because there is a joint in a 2 piece ball valve, there is a probability of leakage after use. Moreover, the simple construction makes it not robust enough for high-pressure applications. As a result, the 2 piece ball valves are used more in low/medium-pressure applications.
