A globe valve, also known as a globe control valve, is a device that is used to actuate, block, or regulate the fluid flow in the piping system of its application. Depending on the configuration of the globe valves, they can be divided into three main types, including standard glove valves, angle globe valves, and oblique globe valves.
In general, the globe valve would be mounted in between the piping in different forms depending on the types they are belonged to. Through the opening or closing of the globe valves, in addition to the actuating or blocking of fluid flow, the volume or direction of the flow would also be influenced.
Valves come in a variety of types, which results in the variations in the applications of each types. According to the sizes and constructions of the valves, the scale of the piping, volume, temperature, or viscosity of the fluid that each type of the valve is suitable for are different. Some of the valves are self-operated, while others are operated manually with an actuator or applied with pneumatic or hydraulic forces.
The globe valve is one of these types that are not suitable for the fluids with precipitate or high viscosity, while the travel of the work with the globe valve is relatively efficient, and this device is erosion resistant as well.
From the exterior, a globe valve is formed by a valve body, a valve bonnet, a valve stem, and a hand wheel, which is used for manually starting or stopping the globe valve. Looking from the interior, the stem penetrates the middle of the valve bonnet, and is attached to the valve disc. In addition, there is a seat ring surrounds the disc and a valve seat is under the valve disc.

The valve body is the base of the globe valve. It is the frame that holds the main assembly of the globe valve. From the sides of the base, there is an inlet and an outlet that are connected through the piping of the application with threaded, bolted, or welded joints.
On the top of the valve body, the valve bonnet that covers part of the valve stem and some other components is attached to it in the welded, threaded or flanged form.

As the above paragraph has mentioned, the valve bonnet is used to cover and secure the internal components, such as the disc and the seat. It is attached to the valve body with the welded, threaded, or flanged joints.
The welded valve bonnet is good at resisting to the external factors that influence the efficiency of the globe valve, such as pressure and temperature. However, it is only suitable for the globe valves that are self-operated and self-maintained, since the bonnet would distort when the weld is removed for repairing.
The threaded valve bonnet is fastened on the valve body with threaded bolts, which is the simplest construction among all the types of valve bonnet. The sizes of the valves in this type are restricted with the required torque to fasten the bolts.
As for the flanged valve bonnet, it is the most versatile because it can be made depending on any size or operating pressure of the globe valves.
● valve stem
The valve stem and the valve disc can be regarded as an integrated part, which the rotating or stopping of the valve stem can facilitate the disc to rotate or move together, or the separated parts, which the swiveling of the disc is not facilitated by the rotating or stopping of the stem.
● valve disc
The valve disc comes in three types, including conventional or ball disc, composition disc, and plug disc.
The conventional or ball disc is designed as a ball shaped metal disc with a short taper, and is mainly used for actuating and blocking of the fluid flow.
The composition disc is capable of withstanding high temperature of the fluid, since there is a nonmetallic and hard ring with a soft face on the disc, which allows it to be used in steam and hot water applications.
The plug disc is the one that is the most suitable for the regulating of fluid flow, which means that it is the most efficient when the plug disc is half opened compared to the other two types. In other words, the conventional and composition disc is possibly applied with the fully opened or closed form.
● valve seat and seat ring
The valve seat and the seat ring are used to block the fluid flow when the disc is perfectly fitted into the seat and secured by the seat ring. The attaching of these three parts makes a seal to the fluid when the fluid flow is supposed to be stopped.
