This connection consists of two tri-clamp ferrules or flanges with a gasket that is compressed in between. Each of the tri-clamp ferrules has two ends. One is the flange end, which would be the widest part of the device and polished to a smooth finish to ensure the proper sealing ability of the ferrule. The other is the tube end, which would be thinner than the flange end and connected to the piping of the applications.
These three segments can be easily disassembled and assembled for cleaning or maintenance. This makes this connection in the tri clamp ball valves be widely applied in the food, drinkable fluids, biotech, pharmaceutical industries, etc.
To choose the suitable tri clamp fitting for the applications that utilize the tri clamp ball valves, there are two features for the customers to choose from, which are the materials and the sizes.
The tri clamp fitting in the tri clamp ball valve can be made of stainless steel or plastic. The stainless steel tri clamp fitting is good at resisting high temperature and high pressure when the tri clamp ball valve is operated.
However, the plastic is more common in the material that makes up the tri clamp fitting, since most of the applications of thr tri clamp ball valves do not work in the environments with extremely high heat and pressure.
Besides, compared to stainless steel, plastic is a cheaper material and easier to disassemble and assemble, which makes it surpass stainless steel with the cost-effective and practical features.
After deciding which material to choose for the tri clamp fitting, then the size of the fitting is the next feature to be considered. As the above introduction has mentioned, the clamp ferrule is comprised of a flange end and a tube end.
To measure the size of the tri clamp fitting in order to accommodate to the compatible application, we should measure the outside diameter of the tube end. Remember the measurement is on neither the inside diameter of the tube end nor the diameter of the flange end.
Since the flange end is usually half an inch wider than the tube end, if the flange end is used as the parameter to decide the size of the tri clamp fitting, it would result in too large size, which is half an inch larger than what it supposed to be.
A tri clamp ball valve is comprised of a valve housing that covers all the components inside, a manually operated level or an automatically operated actuator, a valve stem, a valve disc that is the ball, a valve seat, and two sealing rings.
The tri clamp ball valves can have two to four ports, and the ports are connected with the piping of the applications with the tri clamp fittings, which can be different sizes depending on the sizes of the piping, and are made of either stainless steel or plastic.
On top of the valve stem is a lever for the operator to held in order to initiate the tri clamp ball valve in the manually operated version. As for the automatically operated one, there would be an electric or pneumatic actuator that is allowed for remotely control of the valve.
When the fluid that the tri clamp ball valve is applied for is allowed to flow, the sealing rings would be opened and the ball would be compressed on the valve seat, then the bore of the ball would be opened as well for the fluid to flow.
When the fluid is supposed to be shut off, the ball would float or be fixed by the trunnion in between the opening of the piping, with the sealing rings secure the ball on the sides, and the bore of the ball would be closed accordingly.
