In the past, the development of the bearing concept dates back to the middle ages. One of the earliest versions is a rolling element bearing, which is a wooden ball bearing model that supports a rotating table. During the time of Renaissance, Leonardo da Vinci had already utilized his drawings of ball bearings in his design for helicopter in the 16th century. Later on, many Europeans dedicate to the development of bearing structures in the mechanical design, in hope of making the operation smooth and with less frictions and trobles.

Later, after the invention of steam machines, the urgent demands for smooth mechanical operation became important than ever before. The first modern patented ball bearing was awarded to a British inventor and ironmaster. The inventor invented the first design for a ball bearing in Carmarthen in 1794. That was the first practical modern ball-bearing design, and the ball was running along a groove in the axle assembly. This design gained success.

Broad application in industry

After that, in the recent era, the application of bearing devices becomes wide and welcome. There are different kinds of bearings which are specifically designed and developed for different industrial sectors based on the targeted loads and the feasibility of temperature changes, contaminant exposure level, and the onsite operational stress. Here is an instance, objects in the energy industry such as the wind turbine bearings is a good example demonstrating the usages of the bearing in the power supply. Besides the bearing, there are still other components and parts, and together these components could be as large as two meters regarding its diameter. The load maybe even hundreds of tons to be operated.

Furthermore, in the machine tool and automation industry, the exploitation of bearing components is also a crucial key that determines the final output and decides the quality. Industry today is changing rapidly and in both automation and 3C consumable electric sectors, manufacturers that need to proceed machining tasks in the 21st century tend to purchase machining centers with robotic arm accessories for a wider application. Even if the machine tools are the most fundamental capital goods for manufacturers and play the critical role that determines the final output of the end products, components such as bearing, robotic arm or other automation equipment still play an important but independent role in the accessories market and the relevant industrial sectors. The innovative designs and new applications will keep motivating the industry as well as industrial insiders to make the best use of those components that help to accelerate the machining and manufacturing.
