Cutting Machine GuideCutting machine could be referred to any equipment that cuts dies in the metal working industry, and it may also refer to a very wide inventory of metal cutting equipment that include specific machine models such as turning machine, milling machine, EDM machine, machining center, grinding machine, sawing machine, etc. Here in the present article, we will take a short review of several types of them as an introductory guide to understand about cutting equipment.
Cutting by Turning Methods
CNC lathes for general cutting purposes are turning models which are the most traditional and conservative category that can deal with most of the turning tasks with modest modifications made for users. It can be applied in the widest range in the industrial field. There is neither standard nor restrictions on this model regarding the design and specifications.
Both horizontal and vertical arrangement is acceptable for the general purpose while the horizontal version is more welcomed in the industry. For heavy cutting, there are CNC lathe for heavy duty, which are specifically designed turning machine with high torque features for heavy cutting tasks. The structure of this kind of turning lathe is mostly horizontal and is driven by direct drive or gear driven spindles rather than the conventional belt driven spindles. The horizontal nature makes the turning machine easy to be used and maintained, and are applied to cut purposes for the better holding and clamping of lengthy work pieces. Contrary to horizontal version, a vertical lathe machine is a machine tool that rotates a work piece on an vertical axis mounted on the column and with the rotation that perform various machining operations such as cutting, knurling, sanding, and drilling. The machining processes are conducted with tools that are applied to the work piece and to create an object with symmetry with the axis which is driven by the primary spindle.
Cutting by Milling Methods
CNC milling machine is the process of machining that utilizes spinning tools driven by spindle to remove materials as it advances a tool into one or several work pieces under the control of a computer numerical control system. This machining method could be done on different directions. Milling covers a wide variety of various operations and ranges a wide scale from single tiny parts to heavy and large gang milling operation tasks.
Similar to turning, milling is one of the most usually adopted machining methods that achieve high accurate tolerances. As a result, the research and development of milling method is highly popular in the industrial world due to its productive and effective nature for rendering work pieces with complex profiles. This complex feature is comparatively hard to achieve by conventional turning lathes even with power turret sets. With the milling process, there evolves a lot of machining methods and one of the most popular and widely applied is the machine center. Machining center is a highly developed machine tool that can deal with multiple types of milling tasks at once. At first, machine center was evolved from milling machines at the 1960s and since then, the development of this specific type of machine tools progresses well in the industry as well as consumer market. After that, machine centers are widely applied in all kinds of industries, contributing a wide range of industrial efforts.
Sawing machines are cutting machines that cut a series of objects with the sawing methods. There are mainly two types of sawing methods in the industry and here we will have the two introduced. The first one is band sawing machine and the other one is circular sawing machine.
A band sawing machine is a power-driven sawing machine with a lengthy and sharp blades consisting of a continuous band of tooth-featured metal stretched between wheels to cut the work pieces. Today, the usages of band sawing machines are particularly focused in metalworking, woodworking, and lumbering, but they can also be applied to cut a variety of other hard materials with lengthy body. The major distinguished features of band sawing machines include uniform cutting movement due to its evenly distributed tooth loads, and the capability to cut irregular or curved shapes in a productive speed and volume. There are three fundamental elements that compose a CNC band sawing machines. The first one is the controlling system, the second one is the sawing blades, and the last one is the power source. With these three variables, the speed, the torque, the working range, and other details are to be deducted through calculation.
A circular saw is a powered sawing machine that uses a toothed or abrasive disc set or blade to cut different materials by a rotary motion spinning around an arbor. Circular saws are with higher quality, tight tolerance, and burr-free characteristics. Nowadays when people are making their choice between band sawing machine and circular sawing machine, the cost ratio of their final products would be a consideration.
The four types of cutting machines introduced are only a small amount of machinery types in the field of cutting equipment, and there are still a lot of them in the industry, some are even under innovative development. It is expected that, the study and development of cutting equipment will be more and more popular due to the booming of the world economy and the coming of the smart era.
