Water Cutter

Water cutter may refer to water jet cutter in terms of cutting machinery, which is also known as a water jet for some. This is an industrial tool capable of cutting a wide variety of materials using a very high-pressure jet of water as the substance, or a mixture of water and an abrasive substance. For the option of mixtures, the term abrasive jet refers specifically to the use of a mixture of water and abrasive substance in order to cut hard materials such as metal or granite.


For practical usages, water jet cutters are often used during fabrication of machine parts. It is the preferred process when the materials being cut are sensitive to the high temperatures generated by other methods.

Water jet cutting method is used in various industries, including mining and aerospace. This method is utilized for cutting, shaping, and reaming purposes. Cutting methods such as water cutting and laser cutting are both not metal contacting processes that need not to be carried on by making two metal pieces into contact with each other and this is the advantage of water cutter. Metal to metal cutting is always a practical and traditional way of metal working, and this way of machining is very long lived and widely used for centuries since the very time when human walked into the age of metal civilization. On the other hand, regarding non conventional cutting methods, it was up to the 20th century that scientists know how to concentrate the means such as water substance and laser light and applied them to the industrial applications for hard material cutting tasks.

Similarity to Laser Cutting

After the invention of laser cutting, cutting becomes a different thing in all kinds of industrial sectors. Similar to water cutters, a metalworking laser cutting machine is the machinery that utilizes the laser technology to cut metal materials, and is typically used for industrial manufacturing usages without metal to metal contacts.

Currently the laser cutting technology is also adopted by schools, small businesses, and some hobbyists in a wide variety of usages for different purposes. Laser cutting mechanism works by directing the output of a high-powered laser most commonly through the optics. The laser optics and CNC programming controller are exploited to direct the materials or the laser beam generated with a much more concentrated and precise application. In the practical field, a commercial laser for cutting metal materials includes a motion control system to follow a CNC programmed method of the pattern to be cut onto the targeted materials with the concentrated photons. So simply put, laser cutting technology is a cutting means that uses a laser to slice metal materials just like the water cutter does.

The focused laser beam is directed at the work piece, which then either melts, burns, vaporizes away, or is blown away by a jet of gas, and leaves an edge with a high-quality surface finish.

Working Process of Water Cutter

When water cutting is practiced, all the water jets follow the similar principle. The principle uses water of high pressure that is focused into a beam by a industrial nozzle designed for this purpose. Most water cutting machines that can accomplish this task is conducted by running the water via a high pressure pump as the first step.

Pumps used in water cutting are mainly two types. These pumps are utilized to create high pressure for industrial purposes. An intensifier pump, direct drive or crankshaft pump is necessary equipment. For the mechanism, a direct drive pump operates just as the engine of a car, which forces water via high pressure tubing by the utilization of plunger units attached to the crankshaft. On the other hand, an intensifier pump can create pressure by the function of hydraulic oil to move a piston that forces the water via a tiny hole. Later, the water substance travels along the highly pressured tubing to the nozzle of the water jet unit. Inside the nozzle, the water substance is concentrated into a thin beam by the help of a jewel orifice.
