Tube straightening, as the name implies, is the process that straightens tubes or tube-like cylindrical objects, which are made of metals or metal alloys, such as brass, stainless steel, or copper tubes, etc.
To conduct the straightening process of tubes, the device that would be applied is called the tube straightener, which is composed of multiple rolls that are arranged to be the upper rolls and the lower rolls. This device can be operated manually with the operators feed the workpieces and adjust the knob on the top, or automatically with the control of the computer setting systems.
With the manual operated tube straightener, the workpieces are fed in between the upper and lower rolls once the adjusting knob is turned by the operators. As for the automatic operated tube straightener, the motion of the rolls can be preset and controlled by the computerized systems, which makes the tube straightening process more efficient.
Tube straightening is one type of the metal forming processes, which form the required appearance of the products by shaping the workpieces. The tubes or tube-like objects are widely used for a variety of applications.
Take the plumbing system, for example. The pipes in the plumbing system deliver and distribute the media to the required areas, and these areas can be either small as in one house, or broad as in a high building. Depending on the arrangement of the pipes, there would be some bended parts and also the straight parts. In order to form these straight parts of the pipes, the tube straightener would be required.
In other cases, when there is a necessity to make the metal coils decoil and be applied for other usage, the straightening of the metal coils would also be attained by adopting the tube straightening processes.
In other words, tube straightening is to make the workpieces become straight with the assistance of the tube straighteners. Depending on the requirements of different kinds and sizes of workpieces, these devices may come in small or large sizes as well, so as to make sure the optimal performance for straightening whatever kinds of works.
The main elements of a standard tube straightener are the rolls and the adjusting knob. There is no big difference between each one of the tube straighteners, but the numbers and the arrangement of the rolls is the only slight variation for one another.
● the multiple rolls
As the above introduction has mentioned, the rolls on the tube straighteners are arranged as the upper rolls and the lower rolls. Due to the design of these devices, the multiple rolls usually come in five-roll, six-roll, or ten-roll types.
For the five-roll type of tube straightener, two rolls would be on the upper side, and the other three rolls would be arranged on the lower side. As for the six-roll and ten-roll types, every three or five rolls are evenly set on the upper and the lower sides respectively.
The gaps between the upper rolls and the lower rolls allow the workpieces to be fed into, and with the rotation and interaction between the rolls, the workpieces are able to be advanced and straightened afterwards.
● the adjusting knob
The adjusting knob, which is set on the top of the device, is in charge of the alignment of the multiple rolls. Since the configuration of the rolls and the distances between each roll both influence the performance of the straighten process, the adjustment of these rolls is required with the operators turn the adjusting knob during operation.
● Bend straightening
The tube straightening device is also called the rotary tube straightening machine, since the straightening process is achieved with the rotary motion of the rolls on the machine, in order to produce the bending force on the curved tubes and occur the straightening effects.
● Pressure straightening
This technique is applied with the adjustment of the distances between each roll. During the operation, the tube is fed in between the upper and lower rolls, and the gaps should allow the end of the tube to be fed but smaller than the outside diameter of the tube, because it is the pressure that is given when the tube is trained between the upper and lower rolls that straightens the tube, which makes the adjustment with the adjusting knob important for this device.
To conduct the tube straightening process, it can be simplified into three steps, including tube insertion, gap adjustment, and tube pulling.
1. Tube insertion
The first step is to feed the tube in between the upper and lower rolls by inserting the tube from one end through the gaps between each roll.
2. Gap adjustment
In order to provide pressure to stain the tube, the gap has to be adjusted with the operator turning the adjusting knob after the tube is inserted.
3. Tube pulling
Finally, pull the tube until the required length of the tube has been straightened, and remove the straightened tube from the other end, then the process is completed.
