Manual Surface Grinder Guide

Surface grinding is one of the most important steps in the entire metal processing chain. After forming, cutting and other complex processing, most of the work pieces will be grinding and finishing. Precision manual surface grinders are used to create smooth and fine surfaces of work pieces. Through the grinding wheel covered with rough particles, the metal or non-metallic burrs are cut from the work piece to obtain ideal work piece surfaces.

Manual surface grinder applications

It is worth mentioning whether programmed grinding is absolutely better than manual grinding. In practice, compared with manual operation, turning, milling, boring and grinding through programming are much more economical in mass production. On the other hand, when the required machining cycle is relatively slow, and for special work pieces or machining task, manually operating, like manual surface grinders, can actually handle more complex and such machining tasks difficult to program.

Key factors determine grinding precision

Among all grinding machines, the automated and manual surface grinders are the most common one. The key factors that affect the quality of surface grinding are the material of the grinding wheel and the material of the work piece.

Common work piece materials include aluminum, brass, steel, cast iron, and mild steel. Some of them are more stable and will not corrode and adhere to the grinding wheel during processing, while some may corrode during the processing and then adhere to the surface of the grinding wheel. This kind of material will be less suitable for multi-step processing.

On the other hand, grinding wheel of precision manual surface grinders can be of various shapes. Machine operators can dress wheels for specific grinding requirement. It is worth noting that in the surface grinding process, the shape of the grinding wheel will affect the reverse shape of the work piece, so the operator must always pay attention to the change in the shape of the work piece in order to immediately dress the grinding wheel to maintain the grinding accuracy.

Manual surface grinders are machine tools used to create fine work piece surfaces. The precision of the manual surface grinders depends on the type of machine and the state of the work piece. But most surface grinders must be able to achieve a certain grinding precision.

Surface grinders operation

Cylindrical grinding and roll grinding are different series of manual surface grinding. The grinding head moves down to the work piece, and the work piece can move back and forth. The table is usually equipped with controllable magnetic stock or vacuum chuck.

Generally, a surface grinder has a grinding wheel rotating along a horizontal axis, and grinding is performed on the outer periphery of the grinding wheel. Rotary surface grinders, commonly known as Blanchard type grinders, have a grinding head that controls the grinding wheel to rotate along a vertical axis and perform grinding with the end face of the grinding wheel, while the worktable rotates the work piece in the opposite direction below. This type of machine can remove large amounts of material and grind on flat surfaces with obvious spiral grinding marks. It can also be used to make and sharpen metal stamping dies, flat shear blades, fixture bases or any flat surfaces. The surface grinder can be operated manually or NC controlled.

Rotary features

Surface grinding is a process that removes surface burrs through the grinding wheel in large area and evenly contacts the surface of the work piece.

There are many kinds of rotary table for work pieces, including electromagnetic, mechanical, vacuum, pneumatic or hydraulic clamps. Many manufacturers specialize in designing and producing work piece fixtures to meet customers' various processes and achieve the expected accuracy and work efficiency. Among them, the variable speed rotary table is a standard accessory with variable force electro-magnetic chuck and electronic induction function.

Conclusion

In the 21st century, intelligent manufacturing trends and computer science are booming and are welcomed by industrial users. Even so, in many industrial applications, manual machine tools are still very widely used due to their great flexibility and high customization capabilities. In the market, various series of manual surface grinders are available for machine users to choose.

Although manual operations may not easily produce higher repeatability, many products are not suitable for mass production. Under this condition, market of all series of manual surface grinders still has a certain scale, and due to the large number of manual machine tools, the requirements on the repeatability and accuracy level are becoming more stringent.
