Internal Grinder Guide

In the abrasive cutting process, a cylindrical grinder by definition is a grinding machine used to shape the outer and the inner sides of a workpiece thru its grinding mechanism. The machines designed for this purpose are called external cylindrical grinding machines and internal cylindrical grinding machines. Some grinding machine models may be designed to have only internal grinding functions or only external grinding. Overall, the external or internal cylindrical grinding process can produce cylindrical workpieces of various shapes.

However, the cylindrical workpieces must have at least one central rotation axis and can rotate concentrically during external or internal grinding. This includes not being limited to cylindrical shapes, such as cams, ellipses, crankshafts, etc. The internal cylindrical grinding machines must have four key roles. First of all, the workpiece must continuously rotate. Secondly, the grinding wheel of internal grinders must continuously rotate. Third, the grinding wheel moves forward and backward toward the workpiece. Finally, move the workpiece relative to the grinding wheel. Today, most internal cylindrical grinding machines use these four movements, while there are still internal grinders that use only three of these four movements for machining.

Grinding Wheel

For internal cylindrical grinders, each abrasive on the surface of the grinding wheel cuts a small piece from the workpiece by shear deformation. Due to the difference in purpose and application, the list of grinding machinery is huge, and the classification is also very complicated. Regarding the grinder inventory, some of them are the most well-known, such as belt grinders, bench grinders, internal cylindrical grinders, surface grinders, tool and cutter grinders, fixture grinders, gear grinders, die grinders, angle grinders, and roller grinders. The internal cylindrical grinding machines may include multiple grinding wheels for different purposes. The workpiece is rotated and fed past the wheels to form the interior wall of the cylindrical profile shapes.

In addition, the internal cylindrical grinding machine is used to manufacture precision pipes, tubes, bearing races, bushings, and many other parts. The internal cylindrical grinder is a special type grinding machine, designed and customized for the internal cylindrical grinding of workpieces. Specifically, in most machining details, an internal cylindrical grinding machine is almost the same as a universal cylindrical grinding machine for internal machining, but there are still some key differences between the two. The most important thing is that the requirements and range of internal cylindrical grinding machines are very wide and the blanks are removed very quickly to be able to generate dimensions and concentricity is a process. It is also very important to choose the correct grinding wheel correctly. In theory, rolls of target materials are commonly used in many industrial fields to process products, for paper, paint, steel, textiles, and rubber materials. The length of the roll varies from a few centimeters to six meters or even longer, and over the entire length, a highly polished surface is required. In practical usages, these rollers give sheet metal workpieces that have higher finishing accuracy based on their excellent processing capabilities so that the output is suitable for customer orders.

Internal grinding machines VS Center-less grinding machines

When comparing centerless grinders and cylindrical grinders, it is important to note that centerless grinding is different from central grinding operations (such as internal cylindrical grinding procedures). Because no spindle or fixture is used to locate and fix the workpiece, the workpiece is simply fixed between two rotating grinding wheels, and their rotational speed relative to each other will determine the rate at which the workpiece material is removed from the machining axis.

All in all, the development of grinding is closely related to the development of lathes and milling machines. Grinding is integrated as one of the machining processes in the modern metalworking procedure, achieving the finishing part. For the production line, it is important to have a well-developed internal cylindrical grinding machine to handle all their milled and turned workpieces, so that the following assembly, boring or other processes can be well performed later.

Internal Grinder and Smart Manufacturing

Invented the digital numerical system controlled by the CPU chip, so the CNC system has become the mainstream of the machine tool industry, which makes NC internal diameter cylindrical grinding machine less popular in the market. However, in many specific areas of industry, this similar CNC system method is also suitable for the internal cylindrical grinding machines due to a wide variety of complex working environments and order requirements, which has led to the favor of such controls. Compared with manual and CNC or even automatic working processes, this system is very suitable. In other words, whether it is a manual, NC, CNC, or fully automatic working machine, it will provide solutions based on a market-oriented business model. Industrial users and manufacturers of internal grinding machines should find their own niche market and profit from their skilled machinery and working mechanisms.
