Manual Grinding Machines

Like all other man made machines such as turning machine and milling machines, grinding machines were of manual operation as the standard model at the very beginning when it was first introduced into the market. Operators use their hands instead of programmed controlling system to guide the grinding route of the machine for further operations. There is a huge number of grinding machine inventory. Regarding the grinder inventory, there are belt grinder, bench grinder, cylindrical grinder, surface grinder, tool & cutter grinder, jig grinder, gear grinder, die grinder, angle grinder, and roll grinder, just to name a few. To be specific, although cylindrical grinding is nearly the same as toll grinding in most of the processing details, there are some critical differences between the two categories. Roll grinding method is developed specifically for certain issues that usually require machines that are designed for such heavy grinding works on specific metal materials.

Type of Grinding Machine

Manual cylindrical machines

To be specific, although cylindrical grinding is nearly the same as toll grinding in most of the processing details, there are some critical differences between the two categories. Roll grinding method is developed specifically for certain issues that usually require machines that are designed for such heavy grinding works on specific metal materials. Unlike cylindrical grinding and roll grinding, surface grinder has a head that is lowered to a work piece, which is moved backwards and forth under the grinding wheel on a table that typically has a controllable permanent magnet (which work as a magnetic chuck) for use with magnetic stock, but can have a vacuum chuck or other fixture means. And by manual operation, the grinding of the cylindrical body can be manned by human operators step by step in detail maneuver.

In fact, the essential definition of cylindrical grinding is that the machine must have four critical actions to be counted:
 
First of all, the work piece must be constantly rotating;
Secondly, the grinding wheel, i.e. cutter, must be rotating constantly;
Thirdly, the grinding wheel is fed forwards and backwards towards the work piece. Last, the work pieces are traversed with respect to the grinding wheel.

The majority of cylindrical grinders nowadays utilize all the four movements, while there are still grinders that only utilize three of the four actions to process. Compared with roll grinding, cylindrical by manual operation also has its advantages. In ordinary grinding, rolls are commonly used in many industrial sectors for processing products, for paper, paint, steel, textiles, and rubber material processing. The length of the rolls varies from a few centimeters up to six meters or more, and throughout the length, a highly finished surface is required. In practical usages, these rolls give sheet metal work pieces the high finish, which is required without polishing or further buffing. If the rolls are designed to be used for cold-forming metal, then the great pressure between the work and the rolls would cause the rolls to spring apart at the center part.

Cylindrical OD and ID

The internal grinder (ID) is a specific kind of grinding machine that is designed and customized for the internal grinding of the targeted objects, or say, work piece objects. To be specific, although internal grinding is nearly the same as cylindrical grinding of the interior part in most of the processing details, there are some critical differences between the two. On top of that, requirements and demands of internal grinding range from a very wide scale: a very rapid removal of stock in order to processes capable of generating size as well as concentricity measured in millionths of millimeters. Proper selection of the right grinding wheel is very important too.

Theoretically, rolls of the target are commonly used in many industrial sectors for processing products, for paper, paint, steel, textiles, and rubber material processing. The length of the rolls varies from a few centimeters up to six meters or more, and throughout the length, a highly finished surface is required. In practical usages, these rolls give sheet metal work pieces the high finish results. Regarding the wheel speed, the speed of the two wheels relative to each other provides the grinding actions and determines the rate at which material is removed from the work piece. During operation, the work piece turns with the regulating wheel, with the same linear velocity at the point of contact and no slipping.

 

Grinders today are mostly controlled by programs that are set by engineers and modified by the onsite operators. The operation system of the CNC machine is configured with a humanized operation panel that promises accurate signaling of grinding motions. The friendly human machine interface not only assures precision operation, but also great convenience for users in the manufacturing sites of many different conditions, for most of times.

Manual vs. programmed

It is a big lesson that whether programmed grinding is absolutely better than manual counterparts. In the market, it is commonly known that by massive production model, programmed turning, milling, boring, and grinding is much more economic, rather than good, compared to manual machining operations. On the other side, if time is enough and the customers’ demands are of special requests, the one on one manual operation can actually deal with many difficult processing procedures.
