Conventional Lathe

In the human industrial development, conventional lathe plays an important role in the history. Conventional lathe is an ancient turning machinery which is so productive and is capable of multi-tasking process for many types of machining tasks with significantly big range of possibilities. At first, conventional turning machine is developed from conventional manual processing of spinning cutting art works about 4,000 years ago. At the early age of the 20th century, the development of this specific type of turning machines went specific and later with the computer program; even the common conventional lathe now is equipped with NC system. 

Maybe one may ask then: Why not manually solved? Well, as human found out that, manual operation of processing was with no big difference from turning device process, the development of lathe machines in the ancient time was not that recognized as important then due to the inconvenience for the equipment preparation. Later as the issue of power source has been solved due to the manpower multiply, there is more and more work force that is able to dedicate to the rotational duty that supports the lathe operation. That is to say that, machining technology itself, though lucrative, needs a certain condition to foster its development.

Swiss Type Lathe

A Swiss type lathe is a specific design of lathe providing extreme accuracy and precision standard and that process turning tasks in a specific way. A Swiss-style lathe holds the work piece with both a collet and a guide bushing. The collet locates behind the guide bushing, and the tools sit in front of the guide bushing, which normally holds stationary on the Z axis. To cut lengthwise along the part, the tools would move in and the material itself will move backwards and forth-wards along the Z axis. This design of action allows all the work to be done on the material near the guide bushing where it is more rigid, making them ideal for working on slender work pieces.

Turn and mill machine

Based on the functionality, a turn and mill machine is also known as a CNC turning center, which is a machine tool capable of both turning and milling functions and rotates a work piece on an axis of rotation to perform various, machining operations such as cutting and turning. These kind of machining tasks are conducted with tools that are applied to the work piece and to create an object with symmetry with the axis which is driven by the primary spindle.

Slant Bed CNC Lathe

In the machine tool industry, the slant Bed CNC Lathe is a type of turning model which is the traditional and conservative category that can deal with most of the turning tasks with modest modifications made for users but with the horizontal slant bad base which serves to avoid chip issues. This type of lathe machines can be applied in the widest range in the industrial field. Therefore, there is neither standard nor restriction on this model regarding the design and specifications. With the slant bed nature, chips caused by the cutting movement are much easier to be removed. Since a lathe machine is also called a turning machine, that is a machine tool that rotates a work piece on an axis of rotation to perform various machining operations such as cutting, knurling, sanding, drilling, deformation, facing, and turning; such machining are conducted with tools that are applied to the targeted work piece and to create an object with symmetry profile with the axis, which is driven by the primary spindle.

In the turning tasks, high speed lathe is a productive model of multi-tasking machine tool that can process many kinds of machining tasks with significantly higher spindle speed that is supposed to be higher than at least 20,000 RPM in the Asian market while in the EU the speed may be even higher. In the case of European models, the speed might be even higher than 35,000. At first, high speed turning machine is developed from conventional lathe at the mid of 20th century and since then, the development of this specific type of turning machines go well and further in the industry for the application in the household sectors.

Because of the high speed cutting, the chips caused during the machining are many and that would be a problem to the lathe machine itself once if the chips are not removed properly in time. So in this kind of lathe machines, the speed of chip removal is also a key issue for the lathe frame design.
