CNC Polygon Lathe

CNC polygon lathe is a commonly used lathe model for polygon turning based on CNC lathe models in the industry for polygon shape manufacturing. The term polygonal turning, or say, polygon turning is a CNC lathe machining process. This CNC lathe process allows non-circular forms to be machined and turned. The whole procedure is with no interrupting of the rotation of the raw materials. With this polygon turning measure, the forms of the CNC lathe are polygon-shaped. Although this technique is old now designers add a computer-based controlled system to make it sounder as a CNC lathe. The CNC polygon turning now makes the whole thing even more efficient than before due to many advantageous features.

In order to understand the polygon turning works, let's talk about the traditional turning process first that usually involves circular workpieces instead. The reason for circular is because of the nature of the CNC lathe turning mechanism.

CNC Lathe with Circular Work Pieces

Turning machines are much more or less mono-functional rather than multiple tasks oriented if one compared them with milling machines and machining centers. The chucks of lathes work with the cylinder in order to clamp the cylindrical workpieces firmly for the following machining procedure. The cutting tools are connected with the shank, and the shank is installed on the saddle base and can be moved through the computer coordinated units. So the working process is managed well.

Many turning machines are equipped with many accessories, and these machines are called turning centers. This category belongs to the conventional design that has been developed and massively applied for over a century. The horizontal turning design makes the turning machine operator easy to use and the lathe is easy to be maintained. Vertical lathes are used even wider in a lot of industries due to their convenience and structure. Therefore, there is no standard answer to either horizontal or vertical is better for users. The key issue is about the application phases for the users. Because conventionally, in ordinary circumstances, turning machines with twin spindles are not so common, but if we only consider turning machines with turrets, then the classification could be clear and focused.

Chucks and Clamping

They are categorized into two main types according to the way they clamp the circular-shaped workpieces. Those are the vertical lathe and the horizontal counterparts, and the corresponding results are the same no matter what the direction is. The clamping system and power turret are two related accessories. With the vertical clamping mechanism, the spindles of vertical turning lathes are also located behind the chuck. Some may be belt-driven, and some may belong to other types of spindle models.

Belt Grinding

Once turning-based machines do some non-circular workpieces, one of the most popular methods to achieve the goal is to do it by the method called wide belt grinding. The belt grinding procedure is flexible by adjusting certain parameters, such as the belt speed, grinding pressure, feeding speed, size of the contact drum, and the adopted abrasive belt.

This kind of machine can do wet or dry operations based on their purposes so the designs are different. Furthermore, a wide belt grinding machine can be constructed with single or multiple heads. Here we will further talk about the polygon grinding process. Polygon grinding is a non-circular geometric shape ground on the grinding machines. This is achieved normally through either manual or CNC universal cylindrical grinding machines. The whole grinding process is complicated so if one adopts the manual manner the process may belong.

Today, the CNC-based control mechanism is rather preferred by business owners because it is more convenient and economic. Thus, even it was a complex grinding process that involves a series of manual operations in the old days, now the working protocol is changed. Now, there are some grinding machine manufacturers who are skilled at the design and development of custom grinders.

These manufacturers develop polygon grinding machines that can deal with a wide spectrum of polygon grinding tasks under the help and guidance of a computerized numerical control system, that is, the CNC programming technique.

Customized Polygon Processing

People can adjust and modify this type of customized machine based on customers' demands of the polygonal specifications. The unique feature of the machine was the wheel head, which is based on a mechanical drive system. Users can set the wheel head to move the grinding wheel in an elliptical path to keep the wheel to the norm of the centerline.
