5 Axis Machining Center

A 5-axis CNC machine allows you to work on every surface, apart from the clamping area and the bottom. 5 axis machining involves using a CNC to move a part or cutting tool along five different axes simultaneously. This enables the machining of very complex parts, which is why the 5 axis is especially popular for aerospace applications.
The main advantage of continuous 5 axis machining over 5 axis indexed is speed, since the latter necessitates stopping and starting between each reorientation of the tool whereas the former does not.

Types of 5 Axis Machining Center

Machining center is one of the most efficient ways of metalworking solution in the industry these days. Among all the classifications, there are mainly three types of construction methods that constitute a 5 axis machine.

Separate Swivel Heads

Separate swivel heads are a type that can achieve most machining angles. This machine and other 5-axis components (such as four plus one and three plus two machining centers) are considered convenient. Due to the existing three-axis arrangement, the latter has more practical advantages.

Conventional Machining Centers

Conventional machining centers are designed at least with three axes, namely, x, y, and z, and for both vertical and horizontal models, either one could be equipped with other axes in order to make the machine 5 axes.

Working Table as an Important Variable

By designing two additional axes on the turntable, the x, y, and z axes can be moved to two new working dimensions, enabling multiple possible cutting processes at multiple angles. The four-plus-one structure is the same. All these mechanisms are under the control of a computer numerical control unit, which makes the synchronous action perfectly match the target accuracy.

 

Advantages of Switching to 5 Axis CNC Machining

5-axis CNC machining helps in the cost-effective manufacturing of sophisticated design. The advantages of switching to 5-axis CNC machining include:

Minimized Setup Work

Complex Designs

The additional movement available with 5-axis CNC machining allows you to achieve complex shapes and designs. With the 5-axis CNC machine, you have access to machining angles and arcs that were previously achievable only through multiple setups and a myriad of special fixtures. Ultimately, 5-axis CNC machining eliminates the need to create complex fixtures as you can hold the part once and rotate in a single process to achieve the desired geometry.

Rotational Accuracy

Every time you remove a part from a machine, you lose the precise alignment that allows you to achieve superior quality. Unlike 3-axis machining, 5-axis CNC machining improves accuracy by allowing you to complete a task in a single set up, and create multiple and complex shapes without losing the precision required to maintain quality.

Faster Material Removal

In 5-axis CNC machining, the cutting tool remains tangential to the cutting surface, allowing for low cycle times, which helps save costs as you remove more material each time the tool passes.

Better Surface Finishes

The fourth and fifth axes help you orient and bring the part closer to the cutting tool, allowing you to use a shorter cutting tool, which is less susceptible to vibration at extremely high cutting speeds, helping you achieve a better surface finish. 5-axis CNC machining also saves you time; when using a 3 axis machine, you must make use of very small cuts to achieve a good surface finish, which leads to longer lead times.  (By Ken Brakefield)

It is also worth noting that 5-axis machining centers use the speed advantage to move more parts, which leads to increased wear and increased demand for part collision detection. From a programming perspective, this is one of the reasons why continuous 5-axis machining centers are more difficult. Five-axis machining centers offer significant advantages, including shorter lead times, increased efficiency and longer tool life. However, it is important to realize that it is always more work than to just purchase the latest 5-axis machining center to obtain these benefits.

 

Oversized: Onsite Operational Circumstances

In the case of onsite operation, if the size of the workpiece is too large to exceed the allowed size, the machining will cause the machine body to vibrate too much, which will reduce the accuracy of the machining center, which is unacceptable. Regardless of the manufacturer or the subsequent production line, the manufacturer can add some other structural designs to the car body for better rigidity during the milling process.

The machining process regarding milling capabilities is the use of rotary tools to remove workpiece material by advancing the tool into one or more workpieces. This processing method can be done in different directions. In the field of metalworking, the milling process of machining centers involves a wide variety of operations, ranging from individual small parts to heavy and large milling operations.

5 Axis Installed on Double Column Structure

The double-column plus 5-axis function is one of the very practical solutions to solve the problem of machining vibration while improving accuracy. Double-column machining centers are usually divided into two types: fixed or moving columns. The former is designed so that both columns remain in place and cannot be moved, while the latter allows another shaft to be born, thereby greatly improving the convenience of processing.

The 5-axis CNC double-column machining center is a highly mature machine tool that can handle a variety of machining tasks. After the 5-axis development, the development of this specific type of machine tool has made good progress in the industry.
