5 Axis Machining Center

What defines a machining center?

The concept of the machining center is derived from the milling machine, or, specifically programmed CNC milling machine. That is, there is a blur line in between whether milling-based machinery is a machining center or simply a milling machine. To explain more about this in a simple way is that there exists a wide spectrum of milling-based cutting machinery. While conventional manual milling machines stand at the one end, and multiple axis machining centers with automation system equipment stand at the other end. Conventional machining centers are designed at least with three axes, namely, x, y, and z, and for both vertical and horizontal models, either one could be equipped with other axes in order to make the machine 5 axes. Working table as an important variable With the other additional two axes designed on the rotary table, the x, y, and z axis can move onto two new working dimensions that permit multiple angles of possible cutting processes.

How to distinguish them?

Among all the classifications of the machining center models, there are mainly three types of construction frames that constitute a 5 axis machine. Here in the present article, we introduce them as below. They are swing head type, in which the swing head alone is a type that is able to achieve most 5 axis processing, such as angle processing. This kind of machine is considered convenient as well as other 5 axis compositions, such as four plus one model, or three plus two model of machining centers, while the latter two machining center models are with more practical advantages due to the existing three-axis arrangement.

Existing three-axis arrangement

The so called three-axis arrangement indicates that, conventionally, machining centers are designed at least with three axes, namely, the x, y, and z-axis, and for both vertical and horizontal models, either one could be equipped with other axes in order to make the machine 5 axes.

Programmed control promises better routes

Since the cutting directions are five, which means the route planning is getting complicated compared with the past, and which accelerates the application of computerized controlled cutting with the physical mechanical machine structure. Together with these parameters, the CNC system can make the best use of the hardware of the machinery. There are Japanese brands such as FANUC and MITSUBISHI, and German brands such as SIEMENS and HEIDENHAIN. CNC controller is the key

With the CNC controller, the swing head can perform the best performance, and the same with the four plus one structure and all these mechanisms are all under the control of the computer numerical control unit that makes synchronized actions perfectly matched with the targeted accuracy.

Be careful of the work piece scale

Even with the perfect CNC facility, during onsite operational circumstances, if the size of work piece is too big that is over the size allowed, the machining would cause too much vibration to the machine body and thus deteriorate the precision frame of the machining centers, that is not an acceptable situation to both manufacturers and the following production lines, so manufacturers might add some other structural designs onto the body so as to make it with better rigidity during the milling process.

Milling mechanism
