2D Coordinate Measuring Machine Guide

2D coordinate measuring machine and 3D counterpart are considered important measuring devices for industrial applications. A CMM machine is a coordinate measuring machine which is a device that measures the geometry of physical items by sensing discrete points on the surface of the targeted item with a probe.

Types and Categorization

In the mechanical measuring, there are many types of probes which are adopted in CMM systems. These systems include mechanical, optical, laser, and even white light. Based on the machine models, the probe position may be manually controlled by an onsite operator or it may also be computer controlled based on the programs. In practice, CMMs specify a probe's position in terms of the displacement from a reference position in a three dimensional Cartesian coordinate system. They are designed with XYZ axes. Moreover, in order to moving the probe along the X, Y, and Z axes, many machines also allow the probe angle to be managed to allow measurement of surfaces. In the machine tool industry, the CMM equipment is widely used to do precision measurement for the work piece as well as other objects. They help to achieve the intended accurate processing within the intended standard.

Machine Tools and Instant Measuring

During the machine tool processing, the deployment of CMM in the grinding is very common. Machine tools are the most critical capital goods for manufacturers. They play the critical role that determines the final output of the end products. The quality of the machine tool is the key point of the quality of the manufacturers’ end products. The inventory of machine tools varies from time to time. Now after the invention of the machining centers and the programmed controlling system, the standards of machining become more and more rigid compared with the standards before hand due to the 2D coordinate measuring machine or other measuring systems installed on it.

Besides the CNC machining centers, there are also CNC turning centers, CNC milling machines, CNC tapping and milling centers, CNC drilling and milling centers, and other machining equipment that can work with the 2D coordinate measuring machine. Those machines, though not as versatile as machining centers, are also very powerful in machining specific kinds of work pieces with complicated methodologies. Today, many machine tool manufacturers even integrate CMM devices into their machine tool products rather than installed beside. They apply a broader field of precision standards to the machine tool industry.

Besides Milling Cutting

Not only milling based machines need CMM, but also abrasive cutting machineries such as grinding machines need those supportive services. For grinding machines such as external grinding and internal grinding machines, the role of an installed CMM machine is also very important. 2D coordinate measuring machine can help many precision jobs. In the metal working industry, there are a wide variety of grinding machines, and roll grinders are very efficient for many kinds of grinding processes in the precision machining that need to be calibrated.

A roll grinder is a powered grinding tool or machine tool that used for grinding process, which is a common type of machining that utilizes abrasive wheel or wheels as the cutting means for processing. Each grain of abrasive on the wheel's surface cuts a small chip from the work pieces through shear deformation method. There is a huge number of grinding machine classifications due to the complicated grinding mechanisms that are all different from each other. Furthermore, regarding the grinder inventory, there are belt grinder, bench grinder, cylindrical grinder, surface grinder, tool & cutter grinder, jig grinder, gear grinder, die grinder, angle grinder, and roll grinder, just to name a few and how to deal with the tolerance is the role of the 2D coordinate measuring machines.

Cylindrical Measuring with CMM

Cylindrical grinder includes both the types that use centers and the center-less types. A cylindrical grinder may have multiple grinding wheels for different purposes. And the synchronic works of the probe detecting is critical during the working process. The term synchronic is not literal. The movements are not all at the same time, but at the same working cycle. Here the work piece is rotated and fed past the wheels in order to form a cylinder.

Cylinder is utilized to make precision rods, tubes, bearing races, bushings, and many other precision parts. On the other hand, centre grinding, or center, is usually employed as a machining process when manufacturing all kinds of high-precision shafts. The primary function of this kind of machines is to grind the centers of a shaft very precisely. An accurate round center hole on both sides ensures a position with high repeat accuracy on the live centers, rendering active productivity as well as quality. No matter what kinds of grinding is needed, CMM supportive such as 2D coordinate measuring machine is crucial to the process as well as the results, and with the help of this precision device, the final results are most likely to be close to the industrial demands.
