Spring Compression Tester

Spring Compression Tester Overview

Since the early days, springs have always been an indispensable part of virtually every mechanical products. But to make sure that the springs do what they are intended, they must have the required elasticity and rigidity. This is why durability testing of springs is necessary. Fortunately, with the rapid development in technology, dedicated spring testing equipment, also known as the spring compression testers or spring testers, are now widely available to deliver feasible spring testing.

Spring compression testers can test coil springs and laminated springs under compression and bending loads. These spring testers are closely monitored and controlled for accuracy, sensitivity, durability and calibration in each every stage of their manufacturing process. Spring testers are often required to be calibrated periodically in accordance to the procedures laid out by various standards.

A standard spring tester can consist of a manual or motorized force test stand, a force gauge that acts as an indicator complemented by a load cell, compression plates, and data collection software.

What Are Compression Springs

To give you a glimpse into the compression springs, they are basically devices formed by coils with pitch in between, and are used to push against an applied force or load which then returns to their original position as the force or load is release. Compressing springs are the most prevalent type of springs in modern days and are the most economical as well. There are many types of compression springs used to carry out certain functions in many applications, mechanism or devices, all of which require durable and rigid springs that require testing to ensure the feasibility.

Compression Spring Testing

Springs exist in all aspects of our lives. They are an integral part of many objects that we can easily get our hands on, such as pens, staples, mattress, tire gages, electrical and many other things that would incorporate the use of springs to realize full functionality. The spring can be pushed down as a force is applied on either end so that the full length of the spring can be displaced.

When these compressing springs are manufactured, manufacturers are required to verify the characteristics of their springs and undertake a comprehensive durability test, taking many relevant parameters into account. Several of these parameters that are often measured using a compression spring tester include the spring load, spring rate, load at displacement, as well as displacement at load. Only when these parameters have been verified in accordance to certain standards, they can be deemed as fully functioning compression springs.

Software for Spring Compression Testers

The advancement of spring testers has been taken to another level by incorporating advanced software options, for instance, the Test Builder software, which allows the user to create a test setup without the need of a template. Instead, a spring test can be created based on stage movements and other stage types including cycles, holds, etc.

The advanced software complementing these testers provide the flexibility to establish multiple stages of compression test setups with the ability to provide a more specialized and comprehensive result readout. With the software, spring tests can be established using either the extension or compression template, and then transporting the test setup into the test builder application, enabling more advanced testing features to be utilized. If you are looking for additional flexibility and functionality, consider your software option for the spring test as well.

Spring compression testing systems today are highly precise in order to determine the best result pertaining to the quality and performance for extension and compression springs. Although the testers may appear to be a simple device, the spring testing process, including spring measurement and analysis, is very complex. You may require a specialized knowledge base to be able to oversee and interpret the result from each stage of the test.

With that said, in order to correctly and precisely validate the feasibility of the springs, you have to make sure that your chosen spring compression tester is able to measure all required parameters accurately as we mentioned above. On top of that, you also want to take repeatability of the spring testers into consideration, meaning that it should yield consistent results after many repeated runs. Also, make sure that the spring testers are easy to use and can be applied in the laboratory or on the production floor, taking the configuration of the available space into account.
