Progressive Stamping Press Guide

Introduction of Progressive Stamping

Progressive stamping is a die stamping technique used as one of the metalworking methods which combined with an automatic feeding system, including punching, coining, bending and any other techniques that are used for modifying metal raw material.

This metalworking method usually works with dies in different stations inside the progressive stamping machine while dealing with the workpieces. Therefore, it would sometimes be called die stamping.

It is suitable for mess production since stamp the raw materials inside the dies would not be difficult and can be done automatically. However, to do mess production with this technique, complicated in-press operations is required so that a progressive press which helps to reduce the production cycle time would be required.

Progressive stamping can also be applied on transfer presses.

Work with Progressive Stamping Press

Progressive stamping machine is the operator applying progressive stamping. This stamping machine is designed with different stations responsible for different stamping steps like an independent product line.

In common situations, this machine tool would work with progressive dies and would also be called a die stamping machine.

Dies used on progressive stamping machines are made of tool steel which contains the ability of bearing high shock loading involved, keeping the necessary sharp cutting edge, and resisting the abrasive forces involved. With the features working together, stamping dies would be strong and can be used for a long while, which can help to keep the production cost low.

When machining the raw materials with progressive stamping press machines, the materials, usually metals, would be pushed through all of the stations of a progressive stamping die by the feeding system.

Since the raw materials would be machined by the die in each station in the progressive stamping machine, advancing the strip very precisely would be extremely important so that the workpieces would be aligned within a few thousandths of an inch while moving through each station in the product line.

Stations inside the progressive stamping press machine would be responsible for one or parts of the whole steps of the stamping progression. No matter how many stations the metals would pass, the last step would be a cutoff operation which separates the finished part from the carrying web.

The carrying web and scrap metal that has been cut off during the progress would be thrown away to scrap bins by the underground scrap material conveyor belts.

Progressive stamping press is suitable for mess production by progressive press. Depending on the parts, the production amount can be up to 800 per minute. However, it is not suggested to do when the high precision deep drawing is required. When encountering this situation, a transfer press would be a good alternative choice.

Features of Progressive Stamping Press

Properties and features of using progressive stamping presses can be plenty. Below are some advantages this machine tool gets and be recognized the most:

Faster Production Speeds
Since the feeding of the raw material would not be stopped, the progressive stamping press can work at an extremely high speed that produces the maximum parts within the minimum time spent and downtime. Thus, it can increase productivity.

Cost-Effective Manufacturing
As we discussed in the previous section, the stamping dies used in this machine tool would not be easily destroyed. Another reason why the production cost would be decreased is that only one operator would be required to watch the progressive stamping press. This can help to lower the labor cost.

Minimum Scraps
Progressive stamping presses do produce scraps, but through the optimized tool design of progressive stamping, the scraps can be deducted to the minimum.

Quick Setup
Progressive stamping presses can help to complete the necessary progress like multiple setups, tool changes, and die changes automatically instead of asking the operators to do it.

Complex Geometry
Through the structure of the dies designed for the progressive die stamping machine, the complex geometries can be built to increase the precision.

High Repeatability
The stamping dies used on this machine are strong enough to bear the die stamping progress without degrading and then keep the high quality of the products produced by them.

Combined with the features above, progressive stamping machines can mainly help to increase process efficiency and offer a wide range of simultaneous stamping shapes or impressions.

Metals Suitable for Progressing with Progressive Stamping Press

Basically, progressive stamping presses can be suitable for any kinds of metals that are not easily destroyed by high pressure.

Below are some examples:
● Aluminum
● Steel
● Brass
● Copper
● Inconel
● Noble Metals
● Coated Metals
● Stainless Steel
● Titanium

Industries Work with Progressive Stamping Presses

Progressive stamping is convenient that the manufacturers do not need to shape the products because the progressive stamping press works with dies which already contained the right shape.

Moreover, it can be applied on almost all kinds of commonly used metals, so the progressive stamping presses can be found in many manufacturing industries.

These are industries which might manufacture their products with progressive stamping presses:
● Aerospace
● Automotive
● Medical
● Military
● Lighting
● MEP Applications
