Transverse Weld

We live in a world where so many different things are there for us to explore. Every day we wake up, and we start our daily routine. We make a cup of coffee from the coffee machine. We toast the bread in the toaster. After we finish breakfast, we ride our bike to the subway station. Then we take the subway to work. Do you notice the commonality in all of these activities? The answer is that the means are all made of metals. The thing about the metals is that it is a compound when it is unearthed. After being refined, we get the malleable pure form. But the pure metal does not have the ability to attach itself together to form the equipment we need. Fortunately, humans have found that they can change the form and shape of the metals through high temperature. Since then, an equipment has been invented to help us attach the metals together. One of them is the main discussion of today, the transverse weld.


What Is Welding? 

Before we start to discuss what transverse weld is, we have to first understand what the process of welding is. Welding is a fabrication process which utilizes heat or pressure to fuse two or more parts together. It is very common to apply the technique of welding on metals and thermoplastics. It is sometimes also used on wood.  The joint which has been welded completely is referred as a weldment. Some materials require the use of specific processes and techniques. Depending on the materials, different techniques of the welding are applied. 

However, there are still some materials which are considered not suitable to go through the process of welding. People usually refer the parts which are joined as a parent material. As the material which is added to help form the join is referred as the filler or consumable. Usually, the choice of the consumables are the materials which are similar in composition to the parent material. This way, people can form a homogenous weld. But there are also cases when the consumables are not the same type as the parent materials, such as the welding of the brittle cast irons, and the filler with a very different composition. This way, the welds are called heterogeneous.


What Is Transverse weld?

Now that we know what is the process of welding, we can start to talk about the transverse weld. The transverse weld can be viewed as a technique of welding. The transverse weld is the type of welding that is perpendicular to the force which is applied. Owing to the fact that the load is perpendicular to the weld, the transverse weld is considered as a tensile load. Despite being considered a fairly safe type of welding, there are a few things to consider when applying the technique of the transverse weld.

First of all, if the force is rapidly applied to the weld, it would cause the transverse weld to fail at a significantly lower load. Second of all, if the given force is not properly applied to both of the welds evenly, this would cause the transverse weld to fail at a significantly lower load. And if there are any flaws such as the cracks, craters on undercut which appear on the weld, these will cause the transverse weld to fail at a significantly lower load. The load also needs to be in the static state, if not, it will cause the transverse weld to fail at a significantly lower load. And most importantly, if the load is not perpendicular to the welds, the transverse weld will fail at a relatively lower load. 


Other types of welding

Now that we know what is the process of welding and what is the transverse weld, we can now discuss other types of the welding. Here are a few examples. 


● Slot weld 

The first one to be discussed is the slot weld. Slot weld is the type of welding technique which joins between two overlapping components. The process goes as the weld deposits a fillet weld around the margin of a hole in one ingredient so as to join it to the surface of the other ingredient which is exposed through the hole.


● Plug weld

The plug weld is the type of welding technique which is made by filling a hole in one ingredient of a workpiece with filler metal so as to join it to the surface of an overlapping component exposed through the hole.
